Becareful with silencers, if you get busted with one and no papers it is a class B felonly. I kid you not. In other news, roughly 60 times the volume of your barrel will do the trick. So, if you have a .22 and a 21 inch barrel you need 60x.22X21X3.14=870 cubic inches. If you only want a silencer 12 inches long.... do the math.

That is why I originally stated that it isn't worth the risk. I ain't gonna take the chance until after I have all necessary documentation, and as later stated, that isn't gonna happen any time soon. On a different note, where did you come up with your formula, according to it, a person would need a box that measured 29.5027" on each side and was 1" thick. Can't do the math for a cyl off the top of my head, but I have seen a bunch of suppressors done by Red Jacket, and even a 12 gauge isn't as big as what the formula says a 22 would have to be. I'm gonna have to throw the BS flag on that one. You do understand that a suppressor doesn't trap the gas, it just slows it down, which allows it to cool. The same principle that causes the boom after a lightening bolt causes the boom when you fire a weapon: super heated air, granted you do get some compression pop, but it is minimal compared to the hot air.

I can't imagine taking a 550 yard shot with a .460. Talk about sending morter rounds.

x2 on that, I don't trust the .444 much over 100 yards, it's really more of a woods gun. I have a 30-06 for long range shooting.....

Hey Brushcutter, have you seen this suppressor? I'm considering getting one for my 10/22, looks like the best (muffle?) for the buck.

Brushcutter, yes I have a bit of experience with supressors and the paperwork fiasco. In the 70's I worked as a gunsmith in Las Vegas with Elmer Laramore for 3 years. Being the town that Vegas was at that time, supressed firearms were pretty popular for alot of reasons and commanded a hefty price at the time. If you build your own, use a cone baffle design with the small ends of the cone facing the muzzle of the firearm. Much more effective than a flat baffle design. Not quite HOLLYWOOD quiet, but pretty darn close. Alignment of the bore of the barrel and the suppessor is critical! If you go with a threaded barrel design, fine threads only! Coarse threads have too much play in them and your bores will be out of alignment, inviting an accident.

My dad bought a Weatherby Mark V rifle in .460 MAG 25 years ago for an African Safari Hunting trip. He got sick and never got to shoot anything. When he returned home he gave it to me. I took it to a range and zeroed the scope to me. I thought, what the heck lets try this deer hunting. So I did, and only one time too. I saw a beautiful 8 point buck about 550 yards away, upwind and presented a perfect shot. If I had paid a bit more attention I would have noticed it was not breathing.. I got a good supported shooting position and fired.. I knew something was wrong right away when the head and neck fell away form the body and the rear did not move. I shot a decoy.. and I destroyed it.. I hauled ass so fast out of there and eventually got back to my car and discreetly left the area.

absolutely funny,,,,, I can see you coming through the brush now, almost low crawling!!

You must be sporting a pair the size of church bells to get that close to a hog with a subsonic .22! I enjoy being able to walk too much to get that close myself....

Thanks for the info, can I presume you've had dealings with this? I would love to try building one, I've looked at various types online, even looked at patent drawings to get a better idea of internal components, and construction, and frankly I'm surprised there is no more to them than there is. I read somewhere of a guy building one from a freakin lawnmower muffler?!?!? But it isn't going to happen anytime soon.

Anyway, I dropped a 200+ pounder from 15ft, everything worked right, they were moving downwind and I heard them coming, slipped into a thicket of small pines and waited. Like I said 1 right behind the ear, she was laying on her front feet when I got to her. With the subs I would want to be in a ladder, or my climber. Wind plays a BIG part in hunting hogs, I found where a mixed herd of 'em were laying up in a thicket about 1/4 mile down the creek from where I killed the sow. Got the wind right on a very foggy cold morning, and slipped right up in amongst 'em. I was working on finding a good target and as I stepped over an old log skidder rut, a little one - might have been 8" tall at the shoulders - jumps up, hits my boot sole when he does, squeals REALLY loud and immediately thereafter I was completely UN-surrounded, just like that. Dang thing had buried himself under the pine straw, scared the baJesus out of me it did, I never fired a shot. It's amazing how fast those things can vanish. That was one time I wished I would have been carrying the Mossberg and some OO buck, I would have showed 'em my Cajun hillbilly hose-down technique!

I deer hunt with a Marlin 444S lever action in .444, lovingly dubbed the "Turnip Chucker" for the 240 gr. bullets I shoot...

I keep an AK-47 with a mag of HP's by my bed just in case.

Marlin made a model 70 (SS, I think) "Papoose". I went with the Henry because when it's all broke down, it all stores in the butt stock. ALONG WITH 2 10 rd mags. The Papoose only breaks in two pieces and still must be put in a case. As many times as I have broken mine down and reassembled it, it still retains it's accuracy, and doesn't rattle things loose with multiple firing. Also, when it is broken down and stored in the butt stock, all the parts are in a waterproof case.

around here we have a difficult time classifying the word varmint...used to be coyotes, grondhogs and the like...now it seems to be crackheads and degenerates that use the obits to stake thier next burglary or meth kitchen....law enforcement can do nothing about it unless you pop somebody and they tell me they will take me to jail and prosecute.....so who here can classify varmint? is it the burglars, the meth heads or the cops....am willing to hunt all or any....no pun intended...almost forgot...for smaller game I prefer an extremely old j.c.higgins .22 mag with a 3x9x40 bushnell, larger critters I prefer marlin .444 mag, and degenerates and low lifes, I love my parker arms dbl 12 loaded with OO buck... have a great many more to choose from but those are my favorites...

Squirrels (Tree-rats) are good. Squirrels (Tree-rats) are our friends. And the friends of peas, and carrots, and garlic and onions, and gravy. Taken with either my Henry US AR-7, or my (Scoped) Springfield 187M, and thrown on the grill, they make for a yummy feast. Fasteddie; you make a good point. But the good side of that is that for the most part, they take care of taking each other out. You just can't cure dumb on their part.
