Hi Guys,
Been away for awhile with work, summer holidays, etc. I don't normally post non-AATV topics but I thought some might want to see something different. I was working in the Mackenzie Mountains of the NWT Canada (Northwest Territories - its east of Alaska in case you are wondering) and I had the opportunity to go Dall Sheep hunting with a couple of good friends.
Now, one thing first. I am a moose hunter (aka the argo) and a meat hunter primarily, so going for Dall sheep a new type of hunt for me. Further, I am no super athlete for sure, but I am in reasonable shape so i figured "how hard can a couple of days hiking be?". But when they tell you to work out and prepare for a sheep hunt, THEY ARE NOT KIDDING! Straight up, straight down, straight up, straight down, repeat. AND, Our helicopter was unavailable so we went in by fixed wing, which means you start at the BOTTOM of the mountains. It was 5 days of non-stop hiking with 60pd packs, up and down, up and down. But man, was it fun. I have never worked so steadily physically hard while hunting in my life, nor have I ever been so elated to actually get something. Maybe it was the level of effort, or it was the fact that I could actually stop hiking, I don't know, but it was sure rewarding. The meat is very very good and apparently, the rams we got are pretty nice. my buddy also took a small bull caribou for the meat.
Also, I should add, my close friend that went with me had grown up dreaming of sheep hunting as his mentor, his uncle, was a big bighorn sheep hunter. His uncle passed away a couple of years ago, so the hunt meant a little extra to my buddy. You can tell he is pretty excited in the video. I was really happy for him too.
I tried to keep it as non-gory as possible, but my appologize if anyone is a non-hunter.
Here is a video and some pictures.
