I think ill document a budget spec Attex build to see what the actual costs. including plans for roll bar bends, chassis changes etc. ABS, T-20 4-chain 4 stroke. I have a Body and chassis lined up. Hopefully its cheap, fast and reliable.
BTW i think doing a sales effort maybe with a cooler full of beer at the Hare Scramble may get some answers.

The brown max my buddy Rick rebuilt "was" a racer at one time according to the older fella he bought it from, he said he used to race in ohio in the 70s but for the life of me I cant remeber his name.Red max with chrome factory 3 point roll bar, lives just accross border in Iowa. Charles or Robert comes to mind but neither of us could remeber the guys name!!
anyway he knew the Fischer name so I dont think he was pullig my leg.
cool story anyway, I'd say he was about 65 to 70 years old now

Unaware, or just got too old? If they were 35 years old and racing in 1975.....

I think another problem we face is people out there with racers are not aware that we have gone back to racing perfect example three attex racers up for sale on facebook today.
Attex's Not mine but near me

I am willing to try anything at this point seems like our june event got a bit bigger this year and some new ones are supposed to come in october also. I get the word out as much as possible with this site the other site and 3 or 4 places that i post on facebook to announce the events billy posts it on the pine lake sites.If you want to make up a questionaire and go around with me when i collect or if want me to hand them out i can do that.Originally posted by jerseybigfoot View PostMaybe at the Hare Scramble we should have a questionnaire when the event fees are collected. or as a group of racers we can visit other riders and distribute a flyer with the events and rules and contacts.. At least we can have direct feedback.

I may be wrong but when we have our get trail rides at Pine Lake it is more like a tight knit group. I think a good start would be to invite people we know to a trail ride who don't have a machine. We could take them out, let them drive one themselves and maybe then they might be more inclined to build/buy one for themselves. Then that may morf into some more racers. When I started, trail riding was all I wanted to do and then I saw a few races and I was hooked.

So: any ideas on how to get more bodies out to the trail rides/ events?
The dual-purpose machine always seemed like a good idea to me, but in reality mine didn't work out that well. When Q was racing and doing atv rodeos, we built his Attex so four bolts would pull out the bench seat and bolt in a bucket/harness. What we ended up with was a two-stroke trail machine or racer with a high center of gravity. It was a quick change but didn't do either job extremely well.

My 4-stroke Attex is designed to be a quick change racer/trail machine. The factory seat/engine cover/floor board is removed. Then, the cage bolts onto the frame and body. Both my racing seat and belts are mounted to the cage.
Most people are probably surprised to hear this - because I've only converted it from trail machine to racer once. The last time it was used in trail form was at the final Ledges ride. During the Ashtabula events it wasn't fun trail riding as I was worried about breaking something before the race. Come Saturday night it's time to change into race form, and it takes quite a bit of time. I'd rather kick back at the campfire.
As in all forms of racing, the vehicle is usually the cheapest part. The truck and trailer setup, gas to events, entry fees, time off work, the weeks leading up to prepare for the race, etc is expensive. After a person designs a safe machine with good tires/rims, sprockets, chains, electrical, etc I don't believe the engine costs will change participation numbers. Spending a bit extra to have a ported racing engine is a micro cost in retrospect to the racing season.

I'd have to agree.Originally posted by ARGOJIM View Post4 laps in the woods should eat more than 5 on the track.

It seems everyone is getting to the point that we need to get more folks out to the rides/rallies/races in general in order to get more entries into NEEDT. I wish I had a solution.

Perhaps my wording is off some.Originally posted by LittleG View PostAs a kid i used to do this with the RIM convert it to racing eveyyear i gotta tell ya it turns into a two week project its not as easy as change motors an seat you gotta have scatter shields too and if you put the seat down low like it should be you gotta change the sticks so you can reach them comfortably. And you can have everything pre built set up to just drop in and when the moment comes your gonna find out it takes hours to get it all done because after trail riding all weekend nothing is going to line up the way it should its a nice idea in a perfect world plus the ones that ride the snot out of there machines will most likely have other repairs on top of the conversion.
Basically what I am implying is switching out say a Vanguard or a Predator or even Kohler in lets say a Max II for example.
The floorboards;
are almost all cut at the seat for access so removing the seat and bolting a pre made plate on top of jackshaft tower, same seating position but safer, same stick height.
Attex would be similar with say seat frame bolted to frame and front trans bolts. Engine cover would need a second cut one.
Engine;
provided the stock carbs are used the throttle cable removed, exhaust attached to stock location be it Attex flex pipe or Max external or internal exhaust positions (pre made adapters of course). Engine plates be it Attex or Max are 4 bolts, stock 780 clutching used so no belt change. Fuel line switched. My engine has the stock kill switch on the engine and I teed into it so I could put a switch on the dash per rules ( both function still).
Chain guards covered in floorboards. Engine covers are belt guards ( scatter shields ).
Roll Bar ( used to be 3 points required)
4 point (which most are using now any how.) similar to what I have using stock bar or approved equivalents.
Seat belts 4 point ( weren't they at one time 3 point?);
A set of racing belts with lower attached to frame ( jackshaft tower on Max II), on Max II's a cross bar attached to roll bar would work for shoulder belts.
So basically A Stock Machine with some safety and the spec engine to even things up with minimal outlays and maintenance, one could build his machine this way and trail it if so wanted. Many are using the $300 clones as their build platform now.
Next month should show how many people are interested in racing in general, all of those machines ( less the real racers) will have been beaten on before the Hare Scramble.
4 laps in the woods should eat more than 5 on the track.

I agree and my point is, if there are more machines and the races more entertaining more people hopefully should come on.Originally posted by james gerber View PostIts hard to get people interested in something they have no experience with. They think its cool enough and would like to get involved.
I totally agree, but unless we as machine owners individually stop every quad and side by side we see and say get in they will still sit back and say things like. That's cool, Too big, Too slow, Too wide.Even before we talk about a new class we need a way to get people in 6x6's and to a trail ride event. learning how to drive,
sitting in on a trail ride. (feel the fun that we do)
If you are out there at parks most stop a couple minutes watch and move on with an opinion never having been in one. Or the inevitable " How fast is it?" "Does it float? Followed by "How deep of water will it float in?"

But you know we have a group of race people that are not far from most of the races and can't even keep them interested in coming out.So i don't know if making another class is really the answer.Also there are supposedly people building racers for the last few years that still have not shown up for a sinlgle event. I personally know some guys that bought machines to build up and still haven't started on them.

I agree with you Jimmy, they aren't all like me and willing to just jump in with both feet with a blindfold on!Originally posted by james gerber View PostIts hard to get people interested in something they have no experience with. They think its cool enough and would like to get involved.

They buy prebuilt machines sold buy other fellow racers or built up themselves.
