    • What other events/racing is Bud planning for the weekend? Anything on Monday? If we are sharing the camping with other racers (quads/ bikes) is there a recommended location for the Amphibs to camp?? I will be arriving on Thursday evening and will there be anyone at the Track??? Oh **** I'm starting to sound like my wife..

            • Guys, the place is huge.
              If you want the best spot, get there early, I guess.
              We're actually dropping our trailer off on Monday & will be there on Thursday morning. We'll look for the biggest open area, but we don't think anyone will have any trouble finding anyone. Logic says that it's real hard to pick a spot for all of us (even for Bud) when no one knows for sure how many people or cars will be there. That applies to the racing classes & any obstacle events, too.

              This is how it was in the old days. You showed up. If you wanted to race, you filled out the form on Saturday & paid your money.

              Bud's been doing this for 25+ years. We're sure he has it all figured out.

                • Back in 1970 you drove what seemed like forever (from NJ to Ashtabula) to find a big field for parking and then scout out the various trucks and trailers and occasional motor home to find the sponsors and NATVA officials to pay for the day and get a program or at least a schedule of races. Usually there was some flexibility in the time. You chose a class or classes to race were given a number and class to mark your 6x6 with, sometimes in liquid shoe polish or a card or piece of paper. Things never started on time and communications were by bullhorn. If you wanted to race you had to wait.
                  Practice laps were nonexistent but you were allowed to walk the track. Tec inspections were minimal if they had them at all. If you had seat belts and rollbar and you were good. Not that they checked how they were mounted or what material they were made from. We didn't have protests and we weren’t gentlemen when we raced, your machine left scarred and if you finished the race you were happy and if you won a trophy you were ecstatic. Allot of machines broke down, flipped over, lost tires and some caught fire. In all the chaos nobody was seriously injured that I can recall.
                  The thought of doing it over again has me pumped, but the chaos and carnage will probably keep me running to survive than to win. I have now decided to have a fun weekend and hope the younger blood takes up the torch.

                              I had to trick maps.live.com into realizing that they actually HAD an oblique aerial photo of the racetrack, but it worked. So now, everybody, can make the obligatory two stroke (or four stroke ) noises and make the pretend lateral movements and body leans at their desk while gawking.

                              Edit: I can't post a hyperlink of the ACTUAL aerial photograph, since the URL will only take you to the coordinates, not the oblique aerial. As a tip, if anyone wants to get a REALLY close up view of the track this way, I would suggest using TechFX's coordinates on maps.live.com, head a little bit north (a half mile or so worked), and then click on "bird's eye view", and rotate the view to the south. The flight path that the contractor flew for the photographs was just north of the Site, and they took only south facing photos for this particular path. You have to struggle a bit, but you can get there! I think you can see that the gas cap is off of the dozer if you zoom in enough...

                              • Just thought I'd post up that I cant get away from work that weekend. Well I guess it takes a little pressure off the Hustler build. Everyone have a great time and I'll be living vicariously through the pictures and videos.
