  • Weekend ride in east Texas

As I was taking my Max IV back home on a trailor , Sunday morning , I passed by a very large stone and wood , A-frame house , on my left side . In front of the house I saw eight 4-wheelers in the drive way , with people standing around them . I drove down the road a ways , turned around and parked on the side of the road ,in front of the house . I introduced myself to all of them , and asked if they were going to ride some where close by . The man that owned the house told me , " yeah , we are going to ride real soon behind my house " I then told him I had an amphibious 6x6 on my trailor , and would like to ride with them , if he did,nt mind ? The owner of the property said "Sure ,,when ever your ready " You don,t have to ask me twice .

The land behind his house,,down from his house ,and on the other side of the road , is prime riding for amphibs . Its been raining a lot lately , and all of the bottom land is full of water . All of the jeep trails and 4-wheeler trails were hardly visible . In fact , 95 % of all the jeep and 4-wheeler trails under water . The 4-wheeler crowd all drove down to the edge of the property , where it was flooded with water , to watching me swim across it . This is the first time I,ve ever had a crowd of 4-wheelers watching me in my Max IV .
The owner of the property and a friend of his , was in the back seat of my Max . I eased into the water and swam away from the 4-wheelers for about 80 yards .

As I was postioning my Max IV for the best approach angle , out of the water , I then tried to climb the bank . It was then I noticed I was not moving forward ? Had my Max slipped out of forward ? Nope , it was still in forward . Hmmm Whats up with this ? I then looked backwards , and noticed that the back end of my Max IV was very low in the water . I then tried to climb the bank , and as I looked rearward , I saw water shooting out of the top of the engine cover . It was then I remembered I had not reinstalled my rear drain plugs . I looked under my floor boards , and saw water over the chains . I got out of the Max , and into water over my boots ,and waded about 3 ft , until I could climb up the bank . I then attached my winch line to the closest tree . It was then I remembered where my drain plugs were . Yes,, in the middle console of my Jeep . I then yelled out to those watching me ,, where my plastic drain plugs were . One man drove his honda 4-wheeler back to my jeep and came back with two drain plugs . I,ve been meaning to install a bidge pump . I,m really motivated now .

After I installed my drain plugs , I took my new friends on a ride they would never forget . I drove through bushes , knocked down small trees , swam down flooded jeep trails , until the trails vanished from sight . The Max swam through the water , weaving in between flooded trees , over submerged logs , and then climbed out of the water ,,finding trails they had never seen .

I then let each of my new friends drive my Max . We drove through every place that even looked like a trail , or I thought we could make it through .
My new found 4-wheeler friends were amazed at what the Max could do . We then drove back to the house , and I picked up two more of his friends . After they both watched me drive a while,, I let both of them drive the Max IV . The second time out I decided to take a different trail , than the one we went on the first time . Some times I could feel my wheels touching the ground under the water, but most of the time I could not . I then drove down a trail I had went down before , but this time turned another way . This idea got all of us lost for an hour . As we drove the Max we saw several deer stands in the water. After 30 minutes of driving this way and that way , weaving in between flooded trees ,we then realized we had driven past the same deer stands again , for the third time . Maybe I should have taken the same flooded trail as the first time .

I then drove through tall swamp reeds , bushes ,,over logs , and on land , until I then decided to stop and park it . I got out of the Max and walked between the flooded trees , over logs , and pushed fallen tree branches out of my face . I then found a place that looked like a way out ,and walked back towards my Max . I looked to my left , as I was walking back , and saw one of the guys searching for a way out also . We finally made it out , but this was the hardest challenge I ever put my Max though . I wish I had a helmet cam this day .

When we finally made it back to the house , I asked every one that rode with me , what they thought of my amphibious Max . The owner of the house told me he wanted me to find him a used one . One lady that watched us , and who had recently sold her 4-wheeler , said she wanted one too .

Mike ,your advice paid off big time !

      Lost?

Sounds like an excellent time Mudbug. I don't seem to have the same problems with getting lost as everyone else. I was in the Army for 20 years and your life sometimes hangs on knowing exactly where you are at. Watching the sun and keeping orientated is natural for me since I was subject to being deployed anywhere in the world at any time. The first thing you do is get your bearings and look for land marks. Always know the pattern of the sun for the time of year and you can always figure out which way is north simply by looking at the sun. Glad you enjoyed your weekend. DAN

        rdr ,

This was one of the best times I,ve ever had with my Max IV . My Max IV surprized every one that rode with me , and also drove it themselves . Some times I surprized even myself , in the very technical and very challenging places I was able to take my Max through . A few of the 4-wheeler riders that had wives , and those that had girlfriends , decided to go out to do some trail riding . I went with them to warn them where the deep spots were , but the 4-wheelers took off blazing down the muddy trails , and left me far behind in my Max . Up ahead they would always wait for me . We later came to a spot on the trail that was flooded with water . The other 4-wheelers watched as I drove my Max along the edge of the swamp grass , hoping to find a place where it was not too deep , and they could follow me to the trail section ahead . One brave 4-wheeler rider and his G-friend , decided to ride down the middle of this large water section , and then the back of his 4-wheeler began to sink deep into the water . Coupled with the added weight of an extra person on the back of his 4-wheeler , and his rear wheels trying to find traction , he then found himself in a VERY bad situation . Since none of his 4-wheeler friends could help him , He then asked if I could pull him out with my winch , to the muddy ground ahead . I drove forward and tried to free spool my winch cable out , but it would not for some reason . I could unspool the cable out with the engine running only ,but not free spool ? After I had hooked my winch cable to the front of his Honda , and tried to back up , the wheels on my Max could not find any traction either . I then had him pull on my winch cable as I used the switch to unspool it . With my Max now out of the water and on some muddy ground , I was able to back up and pull him forward . His Honda now stalls out and refuses to run . I try to help him get it restarted , and reach under the Honda and open up the air box drain. Water comes out . We then check the air filter but its ok . He tries to start it again , and this time his Honda sputters , fires up , and he is able to drive it out ,,with my Max pulling him foward . When we all get back to the house he tells his friends that my Max saved the day for him and his G-friend . That day I could go any where the 4-wheelers went , but they could not continue to ride the flooded trails ahead , but I could .

Cool story....I love it when Quad people can appreciate the good side of the amphibs. It's also kinda funny when they get mad because they spent so much money on a quad when they could have had an AATV (aka MightMaxIV in the mud pit)....

BTW, I got a little lost in the salt marsh this year, so I went and got a Garmin 60cx...still gotta learn how to use it.
          Hammers should have warning labels.

            boncrshr ,

Yes,,I can relate to being lost . Where I took the two guys with me , I would never have taken my Max IV by myself , for fear of a break down , or getting myself stuck and no one to help me get out . But,,,I have learned over time , that if you do regular maintenance on your amphib ,and don,t abuse it ,,they are very reliable . I have a Garmin GPS , but always forget to take it with me , when I ride my Max IV . Now I have learned by experience , that I need to take it with me at all times . Who knows when it might come in handy ? I could have sure used it that day , in the flooded bayou that we were lost in for an hour . None of us had a clue where we were . The two men with me had never been that far into the bayou on their 4-wheelers , because the water depth was unknown . Until that day , I had never been in a bayou with so much water that was filled with trees, submerged logs , snakes , and endless vegatation . I had so much fun after I took the last two guys back,,I decided to go back out again . The third time out , I found what looked like a new trail . I continued to drive my Max IV in this direction , until I began to see some wheel prints I,d made the first time out . I now look forward to going again . Hopefully I can find a good deal on a couple of used Max IV,s for sale .

              Place to ride

Looks like you killed two birds with one rock mudbug. You've got a great place to ride and now you'll have some friends with AATV's to ride with you. You couldn't have done better!

He's in Shreveport, his friend Eddie is in east Texas. I'm in Tulsa, Neighbor I try to get Mudbug to consider coming up our way, but he likes the lowly swamps, dislikes hills

                    Roger,

I really like riding in places that suit an amphib :

swamps, bayous, flooded low lands , dirt and mud trails , with some moderate hills on the trail ahead , but not separate from the trail ,,but part of it . Trails that are really technical and challenging for an amphib rider . Thats my type of amphib riding . In east Texas there are about 8 big ATV parks that are only 75-135 miles away from me .
