          • Wow, you guys have some land over there !!! Do you realise that to own that in England you would be in the pop star / Lord / owner of a VERY large company ? In England even a few acres can cost hundreds of thousands of pounds, many, many hundreds of thousands.

OMG! I had no idea that land was so expensive there! Funny that you mention that,my grandfather traced his roots back to England,or english nobility, to the "houghton castle" coat of arms, the whole deal. Did you ever hear of "houghton castle?"

here you go, it's up north Haughton Castle - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia What was your grandfathers surname ? If you owned it now you would be extremely wealthy I would think.

                  • Thanks for the info,I find this stuff really interesting. My grandfathers last name is houghton, not sure if that is the same as surname. I know my grandmother had lots of names for him,LOL. They actually visited the castle quite a while ago.

                    • Ah, could be this one then Some Amazing bits of Houghton History You have to realise that castles / halls and stately homes are two a penny over here (not price wise, just in number) We're a very, very old country and seem to keep a lot of old buildings.
This one for example Himley Hall - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia is five minutes down the road from me, it's where we pop down to in the summer for a stroll around or picnic.
This one is half an hour away Witley Court - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia , nice for a change. Hagley hall is just up the road, Saltwells house I could see from here if it wasn't for trees.

We've got a few But nowhere to go off roading

                      • If you want to PM me some info, names, dob, area lived / born in I'll see what I can dig up. It's got to be a lot easier for me over here as I know of the top of my head what district is next to another, and also google automatically comes up with the country you live in.
Be aware though, not everyone who went to the colonies went of their own free will, and some of the one's that did had good reason to go

                          Thanks Rod,
I'm not sure if you can go back any further, my grandparents did a great job with the family tree,as I am finding out. Looks like the first sir name was sir Adam de Hocton back in 1200.
But the first record is of a man named Herverus, who went with the train of William the Conqueror.
I just added "bits of Houghton history" to the binder I have, as there is all kinds of info there that I don't have. Hobb knobbing with Shakespeare, and the King naming sirlion at the castle, awesome stuff!
There is a footnote, that says we are decendants of Ralph, one of the brothers of John and Ralph, that came over here as boys.

                          • This goes back a little further - Person Page 34841 . One of the problems being spelling of names, no-one seemed to bother so long as it was near enough. Hmmm, it seems we've gone full circle the way youths spell nowadays. I'll see what else I can dig up, remember, if I find you own Buckingham palace I want a drink
