Busco Beach Advice

It looks like the only day my brother and I can head to break in, not break, my new Max II at Busco Beach is Christmas Eve. If anyone is interested in meeting us there for half a day or so of riding, great... Didn't think so. <g>

So, I was wondering if anyone who has been there has any suggestions for trails to ride or avoid, or any other advice regarding Busco Beach.

I look forward to joining everyone at the 6x6World ride there this spring, too!

If you're staying the night, don't camp near the showers. It gets noisy at night.

as your driving into buzco, there are some visable trails on your right next to the road. these were pretty mild and would be good for a break in run. the farther you get from the road the muddier they got. wish i could join you, but the wife would kill me! have fun and we'll see you in the spring

Thanks for the advice, everyone. Luckily, I live close enough for a day trip. My brother and I are heading down very early in the morning so we can get back in time for dinner with the whole family. I think it will be just the right amount of time for a first extended ride with the Max II.

My winch is good- used it once when a perfectly sized log wedged itself between two sets of tires.

I've got a winch kit, a tool kit put together from advice from this forum, a GPS, and lots of ziploc baggies until my drybag gets here.

Please post if you can think of anything else!

Busco Ride

HI Raleigh Rider!

You really don't need a GPS on the Trails at Busco. You can't get lost, the River is on one side and the Highway on the other. There are lots of good riding trails and mud in the area of the sand pits. Head out toward the big hills and you will find the trails. If you want to check out the amphibious ability of the machine there are lots of water ponds to play in. Watch out for the sand it will run out from under you quickly. Hope you enjoy your ride and have fun. Look forward to seeing you at the Spring ride. Look at the videos we made of our ride.

Busco Beach Ride Report

My brother and I went to Busco Beach yesterday (Xmas Eve) for a few hours of learning in my new Max II. We practically had the whole 1600 acres to ourselves! We saw a total of seven other riders, all on 4 wheelers or bikes, the whole time we were there. The conditions were perfect- it was about 50 degrees, and we just had two days of saturating rains.

We took your advice and went to the trails on the right as you come into the park. They were great for learning what the Max can and can't do. We winched only three times, but we definitely chickened out of a few holes that some real monster 4 wheelers obviously got through. Mainly, it was the steep climbs out of the holes that looked to be out of reach of 22 inch tires, regardless of tread. We did find that the body would plow up onto mud and pull the tires off the ground, leaving us rocking and rocking to find bite, just like I've learned from watching videos here.

I have to say that I would have had a lot more fun in some of the mud holes if it weren't so freaking hard to shift between forward and reverse some times. Yes, I used all of the tricks I've read about here, at least as best as I could imitate. I am definitely ordering a shift kit from Richard before my next trip there.

I've attached a photo of our worst stuck of the day. This looked like a regular muddy trail until we hit this spot, where the mud sucked to the bottom of the Max, freezing us in place. All six tires were flinging mud like crazy, but we couldn't break free. I had to winch for about 30 feet, anchoring to two different trees, before we could hook up again.

I am jealous of Max IVs and their 26 inch tires!!! I'm still glad I got the Max II instead, but I am definitely going to have to use a lot of finesse to make up for lack of tire size at places like Busco.

It's only 75 minutes away from me, so I plan to go again in a few weeks. I hope to try a few things differently next time to see if I get through some of the holes any more smoothly.

Oh, and the coolest thing about having an AATV is that I was able to clean off all of the sticky mud by taking a swim in one of the small lakes. I could not imagine how long it would have taken to spray it off with a hose.

coolllllllllll you wil have to come ride with us dont worry about those 22 mike has gone every where i have and then some. stick time and rideing with outher 6 and 8 wheelers will make the differences . you will master it in no time . robbie

robbie is right, our fearless and i do mean fearless moderator will dive off into a mud hole or hit a nasty steep hill in his max II that i wouldn't even think about before seeing him try it. driving style, confidence, and time behind the sticks makes a huge difference.

amen to that!!! i learned alot from being hey_dans passenger for all those years! hes a bit nuts but man he can push a max to the limits!!!! and when you ride in a groupe you are more likely to try stuff you wouldent by yourself (i call it the show off factor) plus if you get stuck its nice to have help close by!

Raleigh Rider you did just fine, it takes time to learn how to attack some of this mud and sometimes the innocent mud holes are the ones that have "Gotcha" written all over them. As stated when you ride with other AATV's the fun factor doubles. Each machine has it's strenghts and weaknesses you will learn to work with your machines high points. Glad you are enjoying your new machine and hope to see you at Busco when the group has their ride.

Watching videos of Mike is truly what put me over the edge with the Max II. I realize a lot of that is the driver, but I felt like at least the vehicle could handle the things I actually need it to do. Stuff like Busco Beach is fun, but it is not the primary purpose of the Max. I do hope to ride there lots, though.
