I have no clue why Briggs made the starter gear out of plastic. It's cheap crap and I had to replace mine twice on my one Max II with the 18HP Vanguard. You have to take the engine cover/blower housing off and a few other engine tin pieces then use a Snap-On thin wall swivel socket......12, 13 or 14mm (I can't remember which one). It's kind of a headache the first time you do it, especially if the engine is still in the machine, but if you have to do it a second time, you'll know the ropes and there shouldn't be as many 4 letter words flying."Looks like you have a problem with your 4 wheeler........you're missin' two wheels there"

I changed mine out without removing the shroud. I had to machine down a socket to make it work though. I took a 1/4" drive socket and machined it as short as possible and also machined the outside diameter to absolute minimum. Then used a swivel on it to get that top bolt out.WANTED: MAX IV

You don't need to remove the flywheel to remove the starter. You do need to inspect the teeth on the flywheel and determine if the ring gear is steel or aluminum. The drive gears for the starter are listed as different for the two flywheels. If your flywheel has the aluminum gear and it's got missing teeth the ring gear isn't available anymore. I found a used flywheel last time I needed one. I've never seen a steel tooth flywheel with a bad ring gear, aluminum ones fail quite often. Good luck
