  • 4 cyl. 4 stroke

Look what I found on ebay.

I'm not sure this engine would be suitable for our application or if it can be fitted to our machines. The idea of a 4 stroke machine with 4 cylinders putting out 30hp and only weighing in at 65 lbs. sounds pretty cool.

Teledyne Engine - What is old is new again! For years ultralight pilots and manufacturers have been looking for a light, reliable, economical four stroke engine, in the 25 to 35 horsepower range. Well it seems that the U.S. government has had one sitting on their military surplus shelves for years!

A company called Vogel's Electro Source from Milford NH, was at Airventure with a little 4 cylinder 4 stroke engine, with a dry weight of 63 lbs. The 32 cubic inch displacement engines are military standard model #4A032-4. They come complete with electronic radio frequency suppressed, waterproof ignition, with shielded spark plugs, and put out about 20 horsepower with the standard carburetor.

But according to David Vogel with a little reworking of the heads, and a larger carburetor the engine can reach over 30 hp. When fire up on the test stand, (two blocks of wood bolted to the bottom of the engine,) the engine fired up and ran like a top. In fact even with NO rubber mounts at all and revving up to nearly 5,000 rpm the engine didn't move.

Parts are still readily available for the engine, according to David " a new head complete sells for $75.00 and you can rebuild the complete bottom end, rings, pistons, and connecting rods for $120.00."

David was offering a show special on the engine, with a prop hub, prop and engine accessories for for $1295.00 U.S.

    George ,

Interesting but I see some conflicting information

Aside from not seeing a foot pounds of torque rating I see many different horse power ratings . Has any tried this motor out personally ?

What is its red line RPM ?

Yeah, I seen the 6hp rating... Saturn Surplus, sells these engines. They're only 20 minutes from me. I called them and they said they've seen them advertised as being between, 6 and 20 hp. They list the Manufacturers Specs, which is 6hp. I'm going up and check them out. For the money, it might be worth buying one.

I saw that too, but for something with that displacement, especially a 4 cylinder, 6 HP looks awful low.

Let us know if you pick one up and how it works out.

Strange how they can come up with numbers like that...I can see maybe a 10 or 20 % variance in performance claims but 500%..! That's a big difference. If my math is correct, 32ci converts to 500cc. It would seem that 20hp should be attainable with that much displacement. I guess the big question would be how much torque do they have?

I emailed David Vogel about these motors and inquired about how he increased the hp; here's the reply:

Still going to go take a look at this motor.

This was taken for Teledyne 20-Horsepower Engine | Archives

A company called Vogel's Electro Source in Milford, New Hampshire displayed the surplus engine (said to be manufactured in the early '90s) to the aviation industry recently. The little 4-cylinder 4-stroke engine has a dry empty weight of 63 pounds. The 32-cubic-inch (524-cc) displacement engines are military standard model #4A032-4. They come complete with electronic radio frequency suppression, waterproof ignition and shielded spark plugs, and put out about 18 to 20 horsepower with the standard carburetor.
"Our dyno tests have shown these stock engines to be in the 18- to 20-hp range," Vogel's Electro Source says. "We will offer affordable plans and kits to safely increase power to 40 horsepower." And although the displayed engine weighed in at 63 pounds, according to Vogel's, "further weight reduction is possible," the company claims.
But according to David Vogel of Vogel's Electro Source, with just a little reworking of the heads and a larger carburetor, the engine can reach more than 30 horsepower. When fired up on the "test stand" (two blocks of wood bolted to the bottom of the engine), the engine ran like a top. In fact, even with no rubber mounts at all and revving up to nearly 5,000 rpm, the engine didn't move.

High teens is pretty respectable for a $400 dollar investment.

6:1 compression. You let Roger put some 12:1 pistons in it, it should be a 50 HP !!!

Saturn Surplus is selling this motor for $749.00 in the crate. Where did you get the $400.00 quote, George?

This looks like a fun little engine! You can probably get some good Hp and torque / per weight out of it, but since it has such a short stroke you would have to turn some rpm's to get there. Not sure how well it would stay together.
What the heck is "fungus proof"?

Interesting motor and if any one uses let it us know

I am skeptical on this motor and its abilities but you never know until you try.

Horse power rating can be a poor measurement of power sometimes

Maybe they used 6 Clydesdale horses or at that 3600rpm it produces the least amount of HP.

Is there a rating on its foot pounds of torque?

They said that you can modify the carburetor to get more power so if you do damage the engine they can say you did something wrong no matter how well you did modifed it .Possible it had to be reduced to 6HP to meet military specs and reliability. I can only speculate but not all aircraft engines would make a good off road vehicle engine . Maybe it does every thing it claims and more but you need to carry 300lbs of fuel to go any distance.
