I guess I lost my ability to adjust carbs or I'm missing something. Can someone explain to me where the set screws are on these carbs. And what is the little plastic peice on the one set screw on the left of the carb? Is that supose to come off to adjust things? Please help. Thanks Seth

The plastic cap covers the idle mixture screw. I pull it off and leave it off. I think the idle speed is controlled by the govenor and a tang has to be bent.

I think you should have an idle speed set screw that pushes on a piece that goes to the governor tang. If your crankshaft and drive clutch is at 12 O'clock the set screw is at 9 O'clock and blow the bottom of the air filter box. There will be a rubber piece that you might have to push against to get a long screw driver in. If you see the plasitc capped idle mixture screw that Roger mentioned, the idles speed set screw is to the left of it and a couple of inches away. If you have a black metal grate held on by two screws remove that piece and leave it off too just like the plastic limiter cap.

Let's go with Jerry's info, I havn't seen a govenor in a while Richard Clark said the tang had to be bent, that's where I came up with that. Removing the black grille and the limiter cap is the main thing, pulling the mixture screw and carb top, spraying carb cleaner and compressed air through it all, will do wonders.

I very glad that I'm not loosing my mind. I will take that stuff off today and spray it good and see what happens. Seth

The idle speed on my 1999 Max IV Briggs is adjusted by bending a tang for the governer. If the engine has a governed idle do not use the throttle stop to adjust the idle, that will cause it to surge at idle.
