Kohler 440 2ax problem

I am swapping for a 4 stroke but till then I'd like to use my hustler. Yesterday I took it for a run and it got me about a mile. It seemed as if it was legging for power then slowed let out 3 back fires and quit. But if I let it sit for a couple hours it will start again. My experience with other motors is its a carb problem but wondering if anyone else has had this problem. I have no confidence in this motor at all it runs good for 20 minutes then quits. Thanks any help would be appreciated.

Could be a bad ignition coil.
When it dies check for spark at the plugs.
