jamesg,
Have you taken off the engine cover a.k.a the fan shroud (red, or black) on the flywheel side to inspect for the leak. i would start there, along with a good pressure washing after its off. Then let it run for a little bit and then inspect. The leak should be noticed. If it is the crank seal on the flywheel,,,, i think you may be able to pull it and change it once the coils, flywheel and stator are disconnected and taken off. At the worst,, you may have to pull the crank. It sounds like a lot of hard work, but really it isn't. It does require you pulling the engine, removing the clutch and then the casing on the clutch side (about 8-10 bolts). After that, disconnect the rods/pistons from the crank (keeping everything in order, piston 1 to piston 1, and piston 2 to piston 2), and pull the crank out and replacing the seal.
With everything exposed, and with a bill of about 150-200 bucks,,, why not just rebuild the whole motor and be done with it. considering that it was sitting for 16 years. This is a vanguard V-twin right? I hope so, cause if it isn't, then the proceedures would be different. Either way, its not hard to do at all once you dive into it and of cource have the appropriate engine manual by your side. I hope that this could help!!HUSTLEMANIAC and a HONORARY MEMBER of the
