Throttle cable to fit a VM-32 Mikuni

I'm looking for a throttle cable to fit my VM-32 Mikuni round slide carburetor and also a twist throttle assembly that will accept this throttle cable too. The throttle cable on my VM-32 Mikini carb comes through the top of the carb.

Hi mudbug. What we do when we use the Mikunis on our 2 stroke 6 wheelers is we get a new Max throttle handle and cable from Recreatives. Depending on how long you need, you can either order one for a Max II, IV or Buffalo Truck. Then you take a letter "I" drill bit and drill the top cap. Now get a tap and die set and cut new threads to match the threads of the Recreatives throttle cable (it's very easy to do because the screw off cap of the Mikuni carburetor where the throttle cable goes in is made of aluminum)......I believe they are 5/16"-24 pitch. I'm not 100% sure on that because I haven't done it in a while so check the threads of the end of the Recreatives throttle cable first to make sure. Then put the adjuster nut on the end of the throttle cable and thread it into the cap. You might also have to trip a little piece of the end of the tip of the cable off to fit it in the round slide/piston of the Mikuni. It's a very easy modification to do and it will be very simple once you have all the parts in front of you.

Is the Mikuni VM32 compatible with the JLO 295 engine? Or is there another size that is better? The Max I just bought was missing its carb and mounting flange. I'm not even sure what size the original carb was other than that it was a Tillotson. However, from what I read the Mikuni swap is recommended? Much thanks. ~Will

That's a pretty good size to start with. Depending on what the VM32 was originally on, you may have to try a couple different pilot jets and main jets to tweak it in just right for the 295, but it should work pretty well once you do. I don't have any idea what size pilot/main a 295 would come with originally, but there are a couple/few guys here on the Site with the Mikunis as original equipment on single JLOs that are running great. Members 6x6 and Duck89 come to mind immediately. Maybe they can clue you in on where to start the tweaking...

So I got my max started yesterday after buying a mikuni carb from a snowmobile off ebay. I'm curious if anyone has a suggestion on how to modify the end of the throttle cable to catch on the round slide. I get how to drill and tap the carb top but I'm not sure what the best way is to modify the end of the cable to seat in the round slide?? I thought about crimping something to the cable shaft but am unsure about what to use. Has anyone had any luck with doing this?

It can easily be done. Are you talking about the newer factory Recreatives throttle cable? If so, just snip some of that metal end piece that is crimped onto the cable and it'll fit in the piston of a Mikuni perfectly. Drill the carburetor cap with a "letter I" drill bit and tap it with a 5/16" tap.....I can't remember exactly what the pitch is, 24 I believe (or whatever matches the thread in the throttle cable). Then put the nut on there and thread it into the Mikuni carburetor cap and you're set.

I don't know if it's aftermarket but it's probably not the one you are referring to since the machine has been holed up in a garage for the past 15 years. The threaded fitting on the end used for adjustment is really long ~4 inches. It is crimped to the cable cover. There is a solid metal shaft after the flex line portion that measures about 2.5 inches and sticks out from the fitting a couple inches. I can't see the flexible cable because the threaded fitting covers it and the solid piece can't be pulled out far enough to clear the end of the really long threaded end fitting. No luck on trimming the other end since it too has a molded piece on it where it attaches to the grip. I'll take a photo tomorrow in the light. I'm thinking that I might be able to trim back the threaded fitting since I couldn't possibly ever need 3 inches of threaded adjustment. Maybe trimming back 2 or so inches will expose the flexible part of the cable and I can then cut off the excess solid shaft.

I was able to cut off the brass end. Trim back the solid portion of cable and reattach using the original mikuni fitting which kept me from having to drill and tap the carburetor top.
