  • AMP Meter Reading

What is a normal AMP meter reading on a Max IV? Mine reads "0" with engine running, switch in "RUN". And in the negative with switch in "RUN-LIGHTS". Do I have an electrical problem or is this condition normal?
If problem what is the fix?
    I know I have many questions, Newtwo6x6.

I've got the same situation with my Max II and the Tecumsah OH160 engine. The engine service manual says that the ammeter won't show a positive reading (charging) unless the battery voltage is low enough (requiring a charge). I haven't had a chance to go through the troubleshooting to determine if the regulator/rectifier is bad. I'm pretty sure the charging coil is good (32 vac +/- to the regulator). On the plus side, your ammeter is good because it shows a discharge. What's your engine? The good people on this site will surely know more than me and be glad to help. Dave

If the amp meter is reading negative volts with the lights on your battery is discharging.
Rev the engine and see if it changes.
Test the voltage at the battery with the engine not running.
Then start the engine and let it idle..... and test it again....it should be higher.
With the lights on if the voltage drops below 12v you might have a short in the circuit or a bad ground.

These engines don't charge much, if at all, at idle. Rev the engine and the meter should quickly go into the positive range.
