  • Stripped drain bolt...

As it turns out, the oil drain bolt is stripped out on our Avenger's Kohler Aegis engine. We bought it used... how lovely! One surprise after another. I can't complain too much, as we got it for a good price. Frustrating though.

Anyhoo... any recommendations as to how to remove this bolt? Which screw extractor is suitable?

    Thank you.

The manual says its a 3/8 hex pipe plug. I've tried female type extractors on hex heads, with no luck. Can you get too them while the engine is in the machine?

I don't have a Kohler Aegis manual as none came with the machine.
This one was supposed to be a 3/8 hex/allen, but it is stripped out.
The Avenger service manual, free from ArgoAdventure.com, shows an oil plug bolt below the primary clutch (stripped out), but the parts manual shows one on the side that faces the front of the Argo, but I could not locate it. Confusing.

Anyhoo... we sucked out about 1.25 quarts out through the dipstick as a "plan B".

I suck the kohler s out then pull the plug and don't get more than a couple oz. out bottom. I've driven a torx bit into stripped Allen plugs and got them out. Have to pull the driven clutch to get a good shot at it.

We tried Torx driver bits but its rounded too much - no bite. We took pics of it to confirm this. The engine might have to be removed, but its probably best to eventually fix the thing.

The only way I've ever gotten an allen plug out was to drill it and use an easy out or drill it out to the tap drill size and run a tap down the hole to clean out the threads. I like the easy outs from snap-on by the way, they have finer teeth.

Thank you for the info on Snap-On extractors, I'll look into them.

Irwin/Hanson sells multi-splined extractors that work great. These are on ebay:Irwin Hanson 13 PC Bolt Extractor Set 1 4" 3 4 Model 54113 | eBay

adding a little heat will help free things up. Also these work for socket heads before they are rounded internally, again, heating the area around the stuck item will help get things turning. Welcome :: Sock-It-Out, inc.
