  • tecumseh troubles

hey all, I am new to the forum. I have an early 80's Argo, I got it from my father-in-law. I have been doing a lot of work to it, lately I am having problems with the carb, surprise surprise, Tecumseh. I have the oh 160 something er other 78a. and I am having troubles with the walbro pulse pump and carb, the pump is not drawing enough if anything, I am wondering what some alternatives would be. I was thinking a small electric pump that would come on once it was running and would stay on. i have done a lot to it lately, i fixed the brakes, adjusted the valve, which were way out! .025 for intake! nuts eh! i am wondering if i should think about abandoning the ol techumseh and switching to a briggs. any info and input would be great.
    Thanks Zach

    Zach,

The Tecumsehs are very good motors, especially for the cold weather, but the Walboro carbs are crap. I took the OH160 Tecumseh out of my Attex Lil Truck and replaced it with a 18HP Briggs Vanguard and it's the best, and easiest motor swap I ever did. First off, part the Tecumseh out......sell the ignition coil, head and valvetrain, charging coil, flywheel, carb, etc and you'll get about $300+ on ebay. The Tecumseh OH series and Briggs Vanguards have the same exact bolt mounting pattern and also, most have a 1" shaft so you simply swap your drive clutch off. Bolt everything up, run new control cables and a belt and you're done. It's a VERY easy swap and you'll be VERY happy you did it.

Double check it isn't the fuel issue. Rig up a gravity feed for it... If it runs better, you could try an aftermarket pulse pump.... Or upgrade engines

Rebuild kits are available for most pulse pumps......check Ebay, it's probably less than $10.
