  • 38hp 440 Kohler 2 cylinder 2 stroke engine

Does any have any experience with 440 Kohler in a Max? I have had a Bigfoot Argo and 8x8 Conquest in the past. They were good but to slow on trail rides. I am looking for a project 6x6 Max any condition, I will up grade the motor if required.
Was the 440 reliable? and how does it perform? Or should I be looking at a 4 stroke motor instead.

    Thanks Laurier

I am relatively new to this type of atv, and I just purchased a 79' Max II w/the 440 F/C Kohler. It is very quick and has pretty good top end after the recent rebuild. But I have not had it in any real deep mud or steep hills were torque would come into play. Also there is also the gas/oil mixing thing and the smell (which I like !!). When it comes right down to it I think its whatever floats your boat (what you like)

2 cycle is for speed and acceleration

2 cycle and slow on trails do not really go hand in hand

for your application I would say a 2 stroke would be better a

Why do we waste tax money on bridges and roads when we can all just drive AATVs

I think he was saying that he wanted more speed.

I think it has more to do with gearing and clutching. It seems that the older machines that were set up for (built around) two strokes performed well going slow or fast. Take for instance a trail sled, most are two cycle and can run slow hilly trails and then turn around and hit a frozen lake and blaze!! So I think it has more to do with gearing and clutching..

will finish the swap next weekend.ill be using the 4 stroke driven clutch on the 2 stroke trans.im expecting a gearing differance,2 stroke model H,4 stroke model GSS.my parts manual lists 2 or 3 different tooth counts for the various gears.the output sprokets have same tooth count.ill post my results !!
