  • Which engiine is this

I am looking for a aatv. I had one found but waited to long trying to decide. I have located another one that's not to far from where I live. Its a max 2. Here is the engine
He is wanting $800 for the rig. Said the trans linkage needs adjusted, and an exhaust put on the engine and the valves adjusted. Here is a pic of the machine.

    Thanks,
    Jeff

It looks like a Tecumseh OH160, which is a single cylinder OHV, 16hp, four stroke engine.

That would make a good first machine. Those OH160's are torquey little motors, but can also be easily upgraded to a Briggs vanguard with pretty much no modifications. Also, the parts go for good money on eBay, so you could part it out to pay for most of a new engine. $800 is a pretty good price if she does run and drive and it is truly just an adjustment needed. Print out the first time buyers guide when you go to look at it. It's a great tool. Your decision should be easy on this one as the parts should be worth over $1000 if run into trouble with it and want to dump it.

It's either an OH160 (16HP) or OH180 (18HP). They're great motors except their downfall is the temperamental Walboro carburetors that came on them. This machine is most likely a 1980's Max II. It's a good machine and very easy to find parts for. Get a good look at it and if it's good, throw an offer out there and see what happens.

Thanks guys. Never had any dealing with a Techumseh. Have always had briggs engines on all of my lawn mowers and have good luck with them.

Are these big enough for 2 grown men to ride in? My father is getting old and we rabbit hunt with beagles. Some of the places we hunt are pretty rough walking even for a young man like my self (47) Dad is 70. I need something that will go through mud and some water and will haul 2 grown men. Im about 200 pounds and 6 ft tall and weigh 200 lbs dad is about 170

You would fit fine, but is your dad going to be able to climb in and out of it? That would be a bigger concern. The max II is one of the roomier 2 passenger machines and provides more leg room than it big brother, the Max IV

Thinking I could maybe fab a step on the passengers side off of the roll bars. Talked to the guy that has it again. He said there was a hole in the tub where the exhaust had come loose and melted a hole in it. He said it had been filled and was OK. Can you fill a hole or patch one in a tub. Sorry for all of the questions

                Thanks,
                Jeff

A hole in the tub can be properly patched using a plastic welder and hdpe or using a few irons and a scrap piece of hdpe. I had to fix that same problem on an 87 Max II. It took about 2 hours to fill the previous owners gaping hole, but it was easy and not a big deal.
