  • Kohler aegis flywheel magnets

    Evening,

I was full of good intentions of doing a complete write up on changing out the stator/flywheel on an aegis engine but I didn't take enough photos. I had 2 machines come back in, both with charging issues. When you turned the primary clutch you could hear a grinding noise.......... The flywheel magnets had come adrift. On the first machine there was a lot of engine vibration also due to the unbalanced flywheel.

I will upload a how to post when I do the second machine.

Below are some photos showing the damage, the water pump cam shaft pulley was smashed, belt burst, stator damaged and only 1 magnet remaining glued to the flywheel.

Was this in field failure or return work?

My new beer holder spilled some on the trails - in it's hair and down it's throat.
    Joe Camel never does that.

Advice is free, it's the application that costs.

Phew, I'll bet that's knocked a hole in the rental profit . You can really do without that sort of thing happening.
It looks from the pics like corrosion has started behind the glue and forced it off ? yes, no ?

Happened on a job, it looks like they have been off for a while,

The corrosion may have played a part, however I am told it is a reasonably common fault.

I too have had them come apart and do havic on stator and have also pulled flywheels and all be unglued and in place have repaired with JB weld and had good results if magnets are still intact.

I may keep the old fly wheels and try to make one out of a few ha ha!!

Flywheels are not too expensive over here, combined though it's not cheap to renew the 4 parts.

if you plan on making one out of several you will need to mark the polarity on the magnets, if you dont place them in correctly youve wasted your time and the magnets cause you wont get them out without breaking them. you'll have to start saving more

I was kidding about making 1 out of old pieces!

It is not worth the hassle to have anything less than 100% mechanically.

Sorry i was just stating that its worked for me on more than one engine, if one or two magnets come loose and dont tear anything up there is always the option to repair it if you don't have 3 or $400 for a new flywheel

Is that the price of a flywheel where you are?

We are around £140 that's gbp, the stators are about £90 from memory, I would need to check the other parts.

I think these must have been like that for a long time judging the state the magnets are in!!

Is your engine a kohler too?

Yes mine is a Kohler Magmun 20 hp and thats the one i didnt get polarity right when placing the magnets and had to buy a new flywheel becase JB Weld dont turn loose of magnets very expensive lesson
