  • 1989 tecumseh argo

I have been using the site as a great resource for fixing my projects. This is the first time i could find my answer by using the search. I purchased my argo with a snowmobile motor installed. The previous owner never got the re-power to work right. I bought the project with the intensions of taking it back to stock. I have purchased a used sears suburban mower with a OH160 tecumseh and a new 94c duster clutch. I have a problem the clutch will not seat against the engine block. The crankshaft is much longer than I think it needs to be. I can cut it down to the 2 1/4 inch that I found in the argo manual. The current length of the crankshaft is 4 inches.

I've never really seen that clutch. Will the shaft go all the way through?

I'd cut it down. Hopefully the threads inside are deep enough. My dad drilled and taped a solid 1" crank once. You may need to if the threads aren't deep enough.

Is the clutch straight bore? The clutch should sit aboot 1/4" from block.

My new beer holder spilled some on the trails - in it's hair and down it's throat.
      Joe Camel never does that.

Advice is free, it's the application that costs.

I have already drilled and tapped the crankshaft. The 94C Comet Duster bore is 1 1/8" for like 2 inches and then it becomes 1". This is the reason it won't go on all the way. I can order another new clutch the IBC style clutch, part number 127-135, looks like it is a straight bore of 1 1/8". Would a 4" long 1 1/8" OD crankshaft work with this style of clutch?

Sounds like you have bought a 30 mm tapered clutch, if it's new see if where you bought it exchange it.

The IBC clutch I have here measures about 3-7/8 depth so you may need a shim or to cut a small bit from the end of the crankshaft to make it work.

Thanks a lot I am going to return the new 94c and buy the new IBC clutch. Just remeasured my crankshaft length on the OH160 tecumseh and it is 3" long. I think everything will be fine if I bolt on the new IBC. I just wanted to make sure that I needed to buy a $500 clutch the 94c was half the price at $250.

Lantz posted some good clutch prices in this thread.

                    I have never heard of a Tecumseh having a 1 1/8" shaft....everything I've seen was 1".
The step on the shaft is to stop the clutch from rubbing the engine case.

My engine came out of sears suburban lawnmower. From what i have seen they made different crank sizes. Mine has a PTO Shaft: 2 7/8" x 1 1/8. Here is a similar crank shaft off ebay, Sears Suburban St 16 Tractor Tecumseh OH160 16HP Engine Crankshaft | eBay
