  • Engine Surges at Idle

It's been awhile I had a new shoulder installed.Mean while my hustler rebuild was put on hold and I purchased an max II.I haven't got to use it much myself but the grand-kids love it.I,am back to work and started back on the hustler again.I do have an question on the Max when an an idle it surges,my thought it's the vacuum pump type.Trying to fine an electric type.Any suggestions?

Since its been sitting a while, I'd suggest a clogged carb jet. The scenario is the idle jet is clogged and doesn't deliver quite enough fuel to idle so the governor gooses the gas a touch and the engine over-revs a bit and satisfies the governor, which then backs off. LRR.

Hey there sb, kinda looks like you and I are kinda in the same boat with the shoulder thing. One dy at a time is all we can do. As far as your engine serge goes, I'm assuming that you have a Vanguard. (Don't matter which model) They are notorious for that, and it is usually from sitting as you stated. A good carb cleaning usually takes care of it. By "Good" I mean pulling the cover and removing all the components and cleaning with carb cleaner and blasting all ports with compressed air. I use brake cleaner and let everything soak for about 1/2 hour before I scrub it and blast it with air. Hope this helps, and good luck on the physical rehab. As well as your projects.
It's all just nuts and bolts.
