Would like to get your thoughts on the pro & con of these 3 engines: Vanguard 23hp, Kawasaki 27hp, and Generac 27hp. If I move up to the 1 1/8 shaft is a new clutch needed and from who. What about exhaust. Prices are running close for all 3. We use the tub for duck hunting and have Kendra Executioners. Thanks for you help.

The clutch for the 1 1/8th shaft will be pricey, last I recall they were around $500. The stock exhaust can be routed correctly even if it exits on the wrong side.
I'm not a big fan of the B&S 23hp, its a finicky engine and will overheat fairly easily. The Kawasaki 27 and Generac are really strong, I prefer the Generac because its got better cooling with a much larger intake fan. If you look on the airboat forums they praise the Generac as being near bullet proof. I think you should also consider the Kohler 23-25 Commander, its more pricey, but you can get it with a 1" shaft so you can use your stock clutch. The upside of the Kohler is it has automatic/hydraulic valve adjusters-and you will never have to set the valves.
Going in a different direction altogether, the Winsun 22hp diesel is a bargain. I have the 25 HP in my Super Swamp Fox and its a real mule of an engine.

Hi
23hp Vanguard [Mitsubishi block some Chinese internals] good engine but Kawasaki 27hp more torque and a little more reliable
Kohler are not reliable enough after 5000hrs after experience [[every item has an upgrade and 80% Chinese ][cast in china, packaged and finish machining usa ]
The reliability issues I was having disappeared when I switched to Kubota diesel equipment .
Generac sounds good but no experience with them
Quality drive systems for the larger drive clutch and correct belt
