  • 20 HP kohler wont run right

I have a 1997 Buffalo Ri and because I had some chain issue in the spring and not the time to fix it I just now got back to it .Tried starting it and and it did after a lot of trys. But it only wanted to run at 3/4 throttle for about one to two mins, then it died, and would not start too easy and then at that run only at a low idle with very little choke. The smoke was whitish in color when it was running strong . so I put in some carb cleaner and change the fuel filter and got backto it the next day .It did almost the same thing but was a lot easyer to start up at first it started up on the second try with full choke. what could be wrong. It does have almost 700 Hours on it .

I would try running some sea foam in it. With this new gas it gums up carbs very fast. I only run non ethanol gas.

      hi
      Check compression wet and dry
Check spark quality with a spark checking tool
Other problems that r common on early kohlers are
      blown head gaskets
leaking inlet manifolds [bolts come loose ]spray carb cleaner around the joining faces
      Pushrods fall out 2 causes
rocker bolts come out [hole is worn out ]
very soft camshaft material ,lobes go flat and lifters wear out very quick

I had much the same issues with my Kohler. It was either the pulse line had gotten hard and cracked or the diaphragm/valves in the fuel pump failed. Either way the old girl deserved a new pump and hose . Those changes, plus replacing the fuel lines and flushing the tank brought her back to life. She's a vintage 1997 also. Good Luck!

When I was having problems with mine I went so far as to put an electric pump in line. One of those low pressure types... I had read (on the internet, of course,) that you could simply add this electric pump to the existing system and voila, your fueling problems would be solved...Not so... It seems that when my pump failed, it would NOT allow fuel to be pushed past the faulty valve inside the pump. So after having installing the "cure all electric pump" I got ZERO positive results. The machine continued to run as though it was overheating and getting sluggish and backfiring etc. Not until I had removed the old vacuum pulse pump and replaced with new, did my problems resolve. I then re-installed the electric pump and checked to see if it would flow past a working functioning pump. Guess what? It did. So now I've got lots of flow available!!!YIPPEEEE Now all the indications of overheating, sluggishness backfiring etc. are GONE. It seems, upon reflection...the machine was... DUH, running lean. Oh well, sometimes the symptoms will lead you down the wrong path...Good luck!

I've concluded there is usually not one but several different causes to make one of these things not run right. When I got mine it turned over an awful lot before starting. I decided fuel wasn't getting pumped up fast enough so I put one of those hand pumps off an outboard motor on mine. It cranked perfect.......for a while. Then started running rough and took a lot of choke. Ethanol I figured. So I got a can of cleaner to soak the carb in and a kit to put in it. While pulling the carb I found the hold down bolts had worked loose, another "little thing" that made it run badly. After soaking, putting the kit in, reinstalling it (making sure the bolts were tight this time) it runs like a dream. Until next time! Run non ethanol if you can get it too.

That ethanol will really mess with these smaller engines, even after only 30 days of sitting they'll run different. for me if i'm only going run 10 er' 20 gals a yr in a unit i'll run 110 race gas.

no doubt, fortunately non ethanol gas is getting much easier to find now. I see it nearly everywhere I go now.
