I am having trouble with my 23 hp Kohler. It is very hard to start, makes loud pops during the starting process and blows fire out of the top of the carb. I then find oil in the air filter and down in the carb. However, when I get it going it runs perfects. Why is it so hard to start?? What should I do? What's up with the oil in my carb?

hi ,
Sounds like the kohler needs a health check.
6 items to check
1At night time check for spark jumping out of the plug lead
Check spark with a check tool fits between plug and the lead with adjustable gap
2 blown head gasket -compression check
Potential compression into the crankcase area -blowby -check with leak down tester
3 crankcase recirculation valve and baffle that was made out of horse hair.
Both of these will cause excessive blowby [oil in carb area ]even if the engine is is good condition.
4 inlet manifold leaking manifold vacumn at the gasket join hard to start . 2ways to check this ,does the engine like to run with some choke partly closed .The second is to spray carby cleaner around the gasket area if speed changes there is a leak .
5 the cam and lifters wear badly ,the cam lobes get flats and also wear round . The hydraulic lifters wear badly on there base .
6 the ignition trigger on the flywheel come loose
There is many other issues with a small block kohler but the above should
give results.
Ps assuming the carby/fuel system is ok clean etc
