Check this one out. Like any other engine, you just can't bolt in the camshaft and expect peak performance. Upgrades to the entire intake and exhaust system should also be performed, or the engine will likely run considerably worse.

My last build was a 23hp briggs I installed flat top pistons rev kit, cam from carts parts plus roller rockers , thin copper head gaskets and high torque starter and hevy duty valve springs it was in a max 2 a little wild for my style of riding just looking for something a little better than stock it has the rev kit already in it

The thin head gaskets and advancing the timing will help a bunch without having to which out the carb, starter etc. i would not spend the money on those copper coated gaskets from C-parts, there just one factory gasket he pulls apart and doubles the money on them.

Sell your 18hp vanguard
Purchase a New Bandalero engine from 600 racing 18hp modified to 28hp
includes cam and valve train upgrades ,high compression pistons ,2 barrel carb [modified jets etc ]
The reason I suggest this is to modify your 18hp the valve train by it self is around the $600 including a rev limiter . There is still the pistons ,carb and inlet manifold .

For the price of that rev limiter your already 1/2 way there to a set of billet connecting rods, or for 2 hundred more your into a billet flywheel good to 10K+ with full timing adjustment. both parts will last you many yrs and many builds, fits all Vanguard 16,18,20 and 23 engines. why sell something that you have history with?

The bando engines do have bottom end but after investigation here are the facts
stock peak torque 2600 rpm
bando """""""""""" 3600rpm
stock hp 3600 rpm
bando hp 5600rpm
Bando engines do operate with stock gearing BUT enjoy an increase in the sprocket size approx. 2-4 teeth approx.U will have plenty of top speed so reducing it to gain bottom end is not a great sacrifice . This all depends on your riding conditions and personal choice . There are many on this site that have them in Max 2 with great success .
Once again depending on riding conditions and the weather IT is highly recommended u use a high octane gasoline to avoid detonation/ pinging issues.[these engines are used in the bando series from a rolling start ]
The alloy flywheel I am fairly confident do not allow for a charging stator for 99% of applications .
The bando camshaft is the smallest duration around and will just run with stock gear ratios but even a slightly bigger cam such as the cheeta cam will not and gear ratio change will be a must.
Going above 5600 and at even 6000rpm will bring on other failures in the long term
