  • Horsepower Gods!!!

I was replying to a site members thread early and the question came to mind,

What is the most horsepower ever to be put in an amphib and how was the machine in reference to performance, driveability and maintenance on the car as a whole?

As of right now, from my knowledge, Whipper holds the top with 50hp Max II,, are there any others?

    Hey Fred,

I don't know what the horsepower record is, but I know there are a lot of 2 stroke machines that race every year at Ashtabula that are probably pretty close to 70 or 80 horsepower (as a guess). There are plenty of liquid cooled two stroke twins in springered and unspringered machines. The 503 Rotax in my racer is rated at 52 hp with the dual carb setup.

The 3 that come to mind are Shanna/KevinGriffin's Mitsubishi MaxIV and Pinto MaxII along with Spookum's Metro Argo. All 3 or 4 cylinder car engines, the Max Iv hated belts and the Max II was very impressive as a trail machine and a racer.

My new beer holder spilled some on the trails - in it's hair and down it's throat.
      Joe Camel never does that.

Advice is free, it's the application that costs.

some of the mudd-ox's have turned-up diesels too. I don't know how "high" though. At least 70 hp with gobs or torque.

I think Bud Fischer's supermod racer is up around the top. It has a high horsepower, liquid cooled snowmobile engine in it (seen on the left in this pic).

After numerous calls and discussion with Bud, he claims near 100 hp in a race machine that was feeding the HAGEN/ROOTER transmission with no issues! Nice eh!!

I didn't know he had a Hagen in there. I remember a while back there was an AATV with a big liquid cooled triple cylinder snowmobile engine that was in the same neighborhood of power that was driving a T-20 and it too did just fine, but anyway, back on topic........how about an Arctic Cat Thundercat triple in a racer? Those guys get some crazy high horsepower out of those engines.

Some big liquid cooled 2 stroke out of a snowmobile. Up north here they're rather plentiful and can actually be picked up pretty cheap.

I've seen them for a few hundred bucks. Even 1990's snowmobiles go dirt cheap up here.
