  • External alternator help

Hello everyone, I am looking for info on how and if I can install a external alternator in my 97 MaxIV with a 18hp vanguard twin cylinder motor in it. I have been reading posts about fellow mud runners that have put external alternators in there 6x6s and am wondering if anyone out here has put one on a motor like mine. Any help, info, or pics would be greatly appreciated. I am planning on adding led headlamps and a external led lite bar, along with led brake and tail lites also a high output ceramic heater in the cab for the winter, and feel that if there is any way of installing more amps then that is what I would like to do. Thanks you all for any and all info you can give me.
    Your fellow mud runner,
    Jerry

We were going to put one in my dads max IV before we decided to switch to a kubota. I run one off my secondary in my attex and was either going to go that route or run right off the primary with some bracket fabrication.

I have run many 1 wire GM style alternators on the Briggs over the yr's, I run em' on the flywheel side but it means you loose Your recoil starter if You have one. these stub shafts are cheap and easy to come by, 1 wire hookup straight to the battery. I do like to add a disconnect in the line so it will only energize when You want it

Thank you so much on the info and pics that you both have given me. I was wondering, Do you have to ad a pulley on the recoil side of the motor?, or do you attach the alternator direct on the shaft stub with a set screw system?. And will there be enough rpm's at engine idle to energize the alternator? And will I have to disconnect the internal stator on the motor before connecting the new alternator?. I don't mean to sound dumb and I apologize for all the questions but this is something I have never done on a small engine. I am very thankful for all the info I can get from you folks. You see, I am a paraplegic and there is no one around my home that can help me do all the work on my maxIV then my better half so when I get into a project like this , I like to know what I am doing by gaining info like this from this site. That is the reason I joined this site, and all you folks have been very helpful to me. So thank you again.

That flywheel PTO adapter was offered by Briggs in order to drive hydro transmissions in garden tractors, Your engine will not have it and you would need to install it. The energize RPM's will be determined by engine RPM and pulley Dia. most Alt's will start to charge @ 1000rpm's.
most adapters are 1" Dia W/keyway and a pulley can be installed with a key and set screw. I like to use a twist lock throttle knob so I can raise the rpm's if the Alt is drawing the idle down to much if its loaded. I'm not saying its the only way to go but its what worked for Me in the past. Your also able to leave your factory charging in place.

akranger72 has been using the same alternator as Argo on his max. I believe its a Denso and they are only about the size of a softball. Very easy to mount and operate with only one wire like the delco. Adding the stub shaft and pulleys isn't to difficult but the rope start will be lost. check out briggs accessorie manual page 45 http://www4.briggsandstratton.com/mi...g%20ms3880.pdf . part #841580I think. I was looking for one earlier this week.

Thanks so much Nubs, you have given me the answers I was looking for and when this weather breaks(hopefully soon) I can get to work on this project. I do have two more questions for you,the first is,where can I pick up or order the flywheel PTO adapter? And the second is, is there a place I can order a twist lock throttle knob from? Again I would like to extend my graditude and thanks for all the info you have shared with me.

I would love to see a picture of someone set up for this mod. I got a one wire alternator on the way and want to mount it in my Max II. Just looking for ideals on how to go about doing it.

The power required to run the alternator is directly related to the draw from it. It you have very little draw it takes very little power to turn it. Now if you have it loaded to the max it takes a lot of power from the motor to turn it. If you like to run big lights Of course it will take a lot of power to run it. Then again you could run the super bright LEDs. and it will only take half the effort to turn the the alternator and you will get the same LUMs . You get what I am trying to say You do not have to disconnect it.

Disabledsportsman I have installed small one wire denso alternators on a briggs vanguard 23hp Max IV and a couple kohler commands on a Max IV and Max Buffalo. Very easy to do. I bought my alternators off ebay for about $75 minus shipping. A 35amp is plenty but you could go up to whatever amperage you want. I went with denso because they are so small about 5 lbs or so and just one wire to your battery. I didn't ever take detailed pics of my installs sorry but here are a couple pics.

Bought the flywheel stub shaft from briggs for the 23hp vanguard and the kohler stub shafts from Kohler Front Drive (Stub Shaft) 2414453-S. I think tewarehouse might have stubs for the briggs also? I bought the stub shaft pulley's from my local Napa along with keyway and a bolt and washers to help secure the pulley onto the stub shaft. I used 1 1/2"x 1 1/2" angle steel and cut two pieces 2" long. I welded the 2 pieces of angle steel to the engine rack on the front side facing the front of Max. You do not have to weld the two pieces of angled steel you could just bolt them onto your rack by getting them lined up first then mark and drill two 1/4" holes through each side of angle steel and on through engine rack. Now you have your alternator mounting bracket. For tension and slack of alternator belt I used old 4 wheeler steering tie rods and cut a 4 or 5" center length out of each then welded them back together to achieve proper length in order to get the belt tight and then adjust out to have slack to take belt off alternator pulley. I bought the belts from Napa also and just measured as close as possible with a tape measure once I had the alternator mounted and stub shaft/pulley on. I measured outside to outside of pulley's with alternator pushed back towards the engine then bought the belt that gave me required tightness with alternator pushed away from engine and about in the middle of the alternators 180deg arc of movement. I used 6ga automotive battery wire from Napa to connect alternator to battery. Good luck

Thanks so much for the great pictures Akranger72. Thats what I was looking for. A picture is worth a 1000 words and makes it so much easier to fab when you have a model. As soon as I get my material in I will be do this mod for my Max II and I will post my end result.
