I have a hustler with the k440-2ax in it. I read that you are supposed to set the timing with a depth tool. I'm talking about adjusting the timing plate by finding tdc and checking the points opening. I kinda understand what to do and I have the tools. But the problem is I can't see my points with my flywheel on or adjust anything. If I take it off to adjust the plate then I can't turn my flywheel to get everything lined up. I'm stuck. Does this really need to be done or can I just line up my timing mark on the plate and the block. image.jpgimage.jpg

I checked out the manual. I found that one before and that is what confused me. It says turn your timing advance mechanism and check stator plate but my flywheel is almost solid. You can't see or do anything behind it without taking it off. I'm stumped.

No it didn't run before because all the wiring was butchered. I got it running tonight pretty good. Now it's starting to miss likes it's just running on one cylinder again. It runs very rich. Burns your eyes. I've tried adjusting carb but can't really tell it's working. It's a walbro carb. Not sure if it's ignition or carb causing it. Was very responsive now very sluggish. Was always rich tho. Not sure what to do.

As far as the points gap. I did remove the cam and set the gap. But I can't figure out how to set the timing. It's probably easy I'm just not gettin it yet. Do you mean just a 12 volt light tester. Hook it up somehow and it will light up when points open.

That makes sense. Thanks. I'll do that I'm having a lot of issues with carb I think. Maybe timing not sure. It runs super rich. And even sprays fuel when I gas on it out the carb intake. I have to choke it about every time I start it to. Seems to open up fairly good. But most of the time doesn't idle and is always rich. Should I start with a carb cleaning. Oh and the carb can be turned, like the on ring is wore. Is this normal. I took it off and it looked ok.

You working with a mikuni? If so, set the float level and make sure the needle and seat are working to shut the fuel off when the bowl is full by turning the carb upside down and trying to blow air in where the fuel line goes with a piece of hose and your mouth, if the air stops when you turn it upside down it is working. If it is a new or different carb than was on it make sure that it has the small hole in the seat where fuel enters the bowl, the one for use with a fuel pump has what I believe it is a 2mm. Set the low speed screw at 1 1/2 turns out and put the clip on the metering needle in the slide in the middle groove. This should get you close and you can tune it after the engine is at operating temp.

Hustler need help. Kohler 440
Ok. I have a few problems. I've posted some on here and had some help so thanks everyone for that.
#1. I'm still having charging problems. I re-wired the whole thing so I dont know if I wired it wrong or if my charging coil is bad. How can I test this.
#2. When it gets hot it starts to backfire thru the carb and run bad. Also always spits gas out of carb like its getting to much. And you have to choke it to start about everytime.
That's the biggest issues right now. Any help is appreciated. I will be tryin to clean and readjust carb and see how that does. It's a walbro carb. Engine is k440-2ax
Compression is good on both cylinders. Haven't set timing yet just lined up timing mark for now also.

I'm not very familiar with 2 strokes. So you are saying that if the crank seals are bad then it will run bad when warm. If so is there anyway to know that for sure. I do see something leaking around what I believe is the head or jug actually where it meets block. Could that cause my problem.
