  • Equus 8068 Tach install on Briggs Vanny 18HP?

    Hello,

I've been attempting to install the Equus 8068 Tach on My 18 HP Briggs Vangaurd. It's the only one I could find that is compatible with a 2 cylinder.

First off let me say this tach is cheaply built, but the price isn't!

I can't get the tach to register any RPMS? I calibrated it for a 2 cylinder as per instructions, and am using the inductive pick-up on one plug wire as per instructions. The Tach is backlit, and does it's homing position when powered up via ignition but nothing for rpms..........any one have any experience with hooking up tachs on a Briggs?? Any suggestions??

    Much appreciated!

Is the pick up around the plug wire fully closed? Is it locked in? Is it in the right orientation, some will have an arrow that points toward the plug. The briggs will spark on every revolution (compression stroke AND exhaust stroke) so it will need to be calibrated like a 2 stroke. The number of cylinders wont matter when using the inductive pick up. You will probably have to read the instruction book for clarification.

      Thanks for your reply,

The pick up it definately locked in, and in the correct direction. I also tried it in the opposite direction as per troubleshooting instructions.
The tach can only be used on a 1 to 12 cylinder engine.....when using the inductive pick-up it only matters if its a distributor or distributorless ignition, those are the only two options in the tachs settings, and I've tried them both....

Maybe it's not compatible on a 2-stroke like senario?? (firing on the compression and exhaust stroke)

What do you think.......have you used one of these tachs before on a Briggs???

      Thanks

          Mine didn't respond either.
I then made sure it was on a straight section of the plug and I flipped the direction. That did the trick for me.
I noticed the Pickup is still a bit loose on the wire because the plug wire OD is too small, so Im going to do the Gas line Mod sleeved over the Plug wire with a notch in the gas line so that it will increase its OD and the pickup will hold tighter.

Can you post a pic of your setup?

Hey, I ended up taking it back and buying another one. (The same kind) As soon as I hooked up the new one I got a signal but it was erratic so I reversed the arrow on the pickup and it works fine now! She idles around 700 rpm

Thank you all for your help.

I read a few different threads on people having the same problem. Once they exchanged it, no problems. Must be the cheaply inductive pickup.

Glad you got it figured out.
