  • Briggs 18 HP...single barrel carb mods, Help or hinder?

    Hello everyone,

I've got an 18 HP Vanguard v-twin. Governless, high rev kit with timing advance key, modified stock exhaust and K&N air filter. It's running pretty good but was wondering can I or should I do anything with the carb...could I drill out the main jet 0.040 over(as stated in another thread) for some more power? or anything else to modify the single barrel carb...or would that be pointless with the current mods I have?

Any thoughts or Ideas greatly appreciated

    Thanks

To be brief, I would put a two barrel carb and a 20hp fuel intake, and you'll have a 20hp Briggs. Add a performance cam, and you'll add more ponies. I dont have any experience with drilling the jets of a single barrel, sorry! You can also check out V-Twin Performance Parts . I hope this helps!!

        hi
To modify the original carb is a little pointless .Modification will yield few benefits .
The biggest modification with a carby is to either fit an accelerator pumped unit .[squirts fuel by mechanical means into carby the factory unit does not provide this ]
A carby with an accelerator pump will give way smoother and quicker acceleration .Far less likely to hesitate stumble etc
The stock carb is 26mm .A good carb to use is the mukuni OEM kohler carb fitted to 25hp single barrel down draught 28mm
The kohler mukuni fits with an adapter plate
A good twin barrel may be one of the big block units .From memory the kohler units have an accel pump . To use this carby modifications will be required and a 2 barrel manifold
