  • Briggs 18HP- Noisy lifters after High Rev kit install?

    Hello,

I've just completed the High rev kit install on my 18 HP Briggs V-twin in my Argo Bigfoot. It seems to be running fine except I immediately notice a difference in lifter noise...it's quite "clicky" sounding.

The only thing different is that I also installed the Iskenderian performance valve springs along with the High rev kit from cartparstplus, so I did not use the shims as they are not required unless you use the stock springs.

I followed the instructions...set valve lash at TDC on compression stroke 0.006 intake and 0.008 exhaust. I also tried 0.005 on exhaust and intake at 1/4" past TDC as per Briggs manual, but there was no difference in sound.

Is this normal...is it because of the new stiffer springs? or do you think something is wrong?

    Thank-you all for your input

Cbass and I have always set out valve lash at .003 and we check it with a .005. Ultimately, one valve is closed the other is open (check the open one, and then switch to the other one). We have also installed the hi rev kits and other performance parts to out machines with no problem. I believe that your lash is too large. Try .003 on both intake and exhaust, and check it with a .005 to ensure that the .005 does not fit, and your set. The stiff springs are just fine with no shims just check the lash. It should be easier to start also!! I hope that I helped you out!

Did You install larger pushrods with the new springs? stock pushrods will flex and or bend easy with some stronger springs. Tom sells 1/4 billet aluminum pushrods.

Looking for a Vanguard Billet Pushrods? Look no further than Cart Parts Plus. Click now for product details.

Ok I will give that a try... I put in the steel push rods that came with the kit, I did not however use larger push rods as the folks at cartparts assured me I would be fine with using the stiffer performance springs and everything else stock. I asked them that very question....should I be concerned?

No, by all means if thats what they sell with the kits then your problem lays elsewhere. I was just thinking of potential weak links. the taping is the concern and will most likely cause a pushrod to slip out of the rocker in time.

Ok absolutely, I went back out and readjusted the valve lash to 0.003 as suggested by fmints. It is sounding great!! Took it for a quick run and it's working excellent. It really hauls A** now!

Thanks for all your help you guys
