  • 18hp Brigg won't charge my battery

    I got some charging problem with my 18hp brigg,it is supposed to be a 20amp charging field according to the regulator that i got. A friend of mine told me to check the field behind the flywheel by putting voltmeter between the two yellow wires and i'm supposed to have, at engine full speed, 30 volt ac and thats what i have. So he told me that was the regulator that was in trouble... I bought a used one( but it's suppose to work fine) and put it there. Now there is no DC voltage at the exit of the regulator.... What do you think, anyone....Did i do something wrong... Tired of charging battery at home!!!

    same regulator? 3 or 4 wire?

      Hi Beeman its a 3 wires voltage regulator, 2 yellow wires and one red wire in the middle.

          I'd check the ground cable then. Make sure it's well grounded back to the engine. I'm assuming your taking the reading as positive (+) of the red wire and (-) is somewhere nice and shinny (:P) off the engine?

            Yes Beeman, My engine is really well grounded and i put my positive tester lead on the red wire and on the engine for the negative . I got less than 1 Volt witch isin't good.... I need to find a way to be sure that the voltage regulator is good or bad.... Did they can be check with a Volt/amp meeter...

              Chances are the "regulator" is nothing more than a diode rectifier.

              If you have a diode check function, red lead on yellow, black lead on red should read ~.7 volts. Both should read the same.

              If no diode check on meter, same leads should read low resistance, reverse leads should read high resistance.

                I agree.

                If a further test is needed, you could try hooking up a 24 transformer

                  Hi Liflod, did you took those mesurement on your own voltage regulator... can you tell me if your winding is charging at iddle... How many volt do you got at that speed out from the voltage regulator...
