John. The governor is simply a counter weight system that is linked to the crank shaft. As your motor spins faster towards its high max rev limit, these rotating counter weights pull the throttle of your carb so that it backs off on throttle. You should be able to trace your throttle cable and your choke cable. What ever is left over is your governor linkage. I removed all the gov stuff on my old tecumseh and it was pretty simple. Maybe someone else can chime in on this - just incase I am -oversimplifying. Good luck bud
No, the travel of the weights are controlled in the block, the shaft does not care weather er' not the arm is on there er' not. need to remember the cam turns 1/2 the rpm's of the crank. anything over 6K you would want to switch out cams anyways
more than happy to post how to remove the weights if that helps
I should have mentioned that when I removed my governor.
You may have to put a spring on the throttle lever, right at the carb, somewhere so it pulls back to low when you let off the handle.
You may already have this as part of your linkage but I didnt have one so I had to add it . FWIW
Thanks Nubs this was very helpful. For some reason I thought it was more difficult than that to disable the governor. Now I will just need to make a bracket for the throttle cable and hopefully be all set.

Can somebody post a pic or two of the setup they have of the throttle cable connecting to their fabricated bracket or whatever method they used to connect it to the carb with a return spring.
I see from your picture you have the green spring on the second hole of the governor. Is that where this should be? My Vanguard 18hp (response) that I just bought has it on the first hole.

Well all I can tell ya for sure is that this setup was on a generator than was set for 3450 RPM's wide open. you can bend the tab that the spring clips too and change the rpm's somewhat without changing the spring color, ( that's what the manual tells ya to do) the arm that bolts on the governor shaft can also be moved. if it ever has been messed with then you'll need to start from scratch.

Would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
I built one for Cbass on his Briggs that is a whole lot better than mine. May you can pm him and he will post a pic or two. Admin Mike has a nice setup also. You can see it if you raid his gallery!
