Im replaceing the stock 7 horse briggs in my 69 Action Age Scrambler. Looking for a 16 horse, I prefer honda. My concern is I havnt been able to find a motor with the recoil facing the front, where the pull start is routed through body on the scrambler, all Ive seen is the recoil facing towards the back, Does anyone have a reccomendation for a motor that will fit in. As for the recoil, usually, as Jim says, the actual mechanism can be repositioned, you may just have to drill another hole in the cover.

Hi CM, you can check these out. Honda clone. DuroMax 16 Hp., 1'' Shaft, Recoil/Electric Start Engine I bought one for my attex. Haven't had time to put it in but I've run it on the floor a couple of times. Starts right up and sounds good. I was thinking of taking off the gas tank and muffler so it would fit under the stock hood. Good luck Mike

Thanks for the replys, I appreciate the tips, Im gonna see if a 14 horese honda will fit in, I dont want any modifications to the body, I am going with electric start and pull start as a backup, I will find a good place to mount a battery tray, the balloon tires are in great shape but they dont hold air for very long, Im gonna try some slime and see if that seals them up. ya I just checked this motor out, its a good price for a 16 horse electric start, you say it a honda clone, I was lookin for a honda 16 horse and couldnt find one, they seem to jump from 13 hp to 20 hp, and I struggled to find a 16 hp briggs, I want to stay with a single cylinder so I can retain my back seat. This motor looks like it might work, I would have to find a way to hookup the throttle cable, choke cable, shut off switch and then run the ignition switch to the column, I just might get this Duromax, thanks for the link

I sat a 18hp opposed twin in a scrambler and it did fit with the back seat. It was real close the the back of the tub so I decided not to use it. Im sure you could use a v twin with no problems and keep the back seat. There are some good honda clones though. There are a few bad ones to avoid so do a little research first before you pull the trigger. Ive had great look with my Powermax which is now Duromax.
Also there is a scrambler in grand rapids craigslist. Looks pretty crusty but possibly some usable parts left and its cheap enough. 6 wheeler shell needs love

Thanks for the reply, ya Im gonna take the duromax dimensions and measure the scrambler to make sure it fits, I was hoping to be able to use the same belt as it looks like a pain to replace one, looks like you have to brake a chain and dissamble the frame, They say the duromax is a honda clone it you go to Duromax 16 HP Go Kart Log Splitter Gas Power Engine Motor XP16HPE Electric Start | eBay this guy has thm for 300 free shipping. Im not sure if the duromax is a single or twin cylinder. So do you have a duromax in a scrambler? And BTW I bought that scrambler shell in gr, it actually was quite a bit north of gr, it was in newago, it was rough but with the axles and hydraulics you cant beat 30 bucks.

I have purchased the 13 horse 420cc predator from harbor freight, it does nicely fit in the scrambler, with breathing room at the top and at the back. The clutches are about an inch apart from lining up, because the shaft of the motor has a one inch sleeve thats part of the crankshaft. So I have a couple alternatives, the first is the secondary clutch on the axle has two collars, one on each side with an allen screw holding them down to keep the clutch in place, I removed the srews and slid the collars away. Im trying to slide the clutch over about 3/4 of an inch, just short of hiting the bleeder cap for the hydraulics. If Im still a 1/4 inch off, then Im going to mount a steel plate to the motor mount plate of the scrambler, then drill holes in the plate to slide the motor over a 1/4 inch, and 1/4 inch is all I got. At that point the clutches should be lined up. I couldnt get the secondary clutch to move tonight, Im going to borrow the nighbors torches tommorow and heat it up, trying not to get the clutch spring to hot, and hopefully the clutch will move. Hookin up the throttle and choke and gas and mounting a battery shouldnt be the bad as long as I can get the senondary clutch to move.
