Just put a new starter on my briggs 18HP and it don't sound like the older one it kinda makes this loud whining noise. The starter that came off was also longer and had a nylon gear. Will the starter with the steel gear chew up my flywheel, should I replace it with a nylon gear starter?

hi
I can also can confirm that there are at least 3 different types . My collection of motors is 1996-2004 18hp.
It is best to purchase the flywheel ,fan, shroud ,inlet screen together. The backing plate that bolts onto the block can also be different. There are at least 3 different pull starts also which compromises mechanism and drive cup .
There are many different starter setups .
The nylon or alloy gear starters cannot be converted
Steel drive gears can only be used on steel flywheels
The 2 u should be interested in are the part no BS 691564 hd standard str or preferable the starter with a automotive solenoid by far the best choice .
Both have a steel drive gear and need the steel flywheel

Thanks for the info everyone its very helpful. I guess I will need to look up the part number for my model engine to make sure its going to work correctly. I did see that some websites have discontinued the steel flywheel hopefully the one I need isn't discontinued already also.
