  • 98 Vanguard crank seals

the crank seals keep blowing out 1st one side than athe other. Has anyone experianced this? What fixes it? Apparently there was some warrenty work back than with the Vanguard engine? its an 18hp. This one has 900 problem free hours...until this.

    Thanks

Check that the crankcase ventilation system is not pluged and that the oil level is not too high. Aside from this, not sure. Good luck!

If they're just getting pushed out, glue them in. You can almost push them in with your hand anyway. As to why they are coming out.. you could look at crank case pressure, the thing the breather hose hooks to has a check valve, sort of a reed valve, one way vent..

Is it throwing a lot of oil into the air filter?

If the air filter is full of oil from the crankcase vent, and it's not overfull on the stick, I'd be thinking it's piston/rings.

Thanks Roger but the compression is fine

You might look at that breather valve I mentioned. But if it's soaking the air filter I'd think it was blow by.

This is exactly my trouble. Oil is getting on air filter, compression is good. Engine looses power when hot an I need to throttle choke to get home. Thanks I'll look at the crank vent. I sent it to a "small engine" mechanic while I was moving, he had it for 8 weeks and it still runs like crap. I even told him to check why the oil was coming out of the rubber hose and when you pulled oil dip stick it had pressure. What a hack. Awsome thanks Roger.
