  • Ceramic exhaust header coating

    Hi
With all the talk of hot engine bays .
Has any body tried this process at home ????????????.
    What are your experiences ???
I am talking about a surface treatment similar to ""jet hot "" that reduces temperature [not the paints that are only for appearance/rust prevention ]
The temperature reduction is claimed to reduce as much as 50% [dyno testing ]

The factory process is typically below ,appears to be the most common but there are other ways of coating also
    prep sand blast
    heat to remove other contaminates
    apply coating
    oven cure
    coating is a matt finish
    industrial vibration polisher

tomo, we have used that process on our mufflers on our 582 rotax ultralites. the engines are not in a engine bay, but have had great results with the finish holding up well. have noticed a reduction in the exhaust gas temps too. worth a try. johnboy va.

From the web site, it looks like you send your parts for the Jet Hot coating. I've seen some high temperature ceramic coatings that are applied using powder coating methods. Those could be done at home with fairly low investment in tools. You can get a cheap starter powder gun for $100 and a used electric oven can be found for free. Beyond that, you just need the powder and a source of clean dry air.

tomo, i sent mine to jet hot in no. carolina. to d.i.y. you need a sandblaster, oven (not your kitchen one), etc. for the muffler on the rotax 582 it was about 175.00 dollars. way cheaper than buying all the necessary equipment. call and talk to them. 800 432 3379. johnboy va.

I've used the Eastwood gun and gotten good results. The prep is 95% of it. The Eastwood guns start at $100, the dual voltage is about double that. Harbor Fright also sells a gun that will work that you can get for maybe $50 on a good day. I get my powder from Prismatic Powders, but there are lots of others. Prismatic will send you a free sample color chip to evaluate color before you buy. I've never used the high temp stuff so I have no first hand knowledge of how well any of it works.

Funny thing about powder guns is there are cheap guns at $1-200, then a jump to $6-900, then a jump to $3000.
