  • Bosch Starter

I have a 1970s argo with a Kohler engine. The Bosch starter isn't working so I pulled it off, but now I can't get it apart to clean the brushes. I removed the 2 long bolts that run through each side of the casing, but it wont come apart. From videos of other starters it appears that the round cylinder case should just pull apart, but Im not sure if it comes apart at the end with the bendix or just the other end where the brushes are located. has anyone repaired one of these before?

I can't supply you with a pic right now, but last night after soaking it in liquid wrench and lots of tapping I was able to get the end where the brushes should be to almost separate. There was a pile of rust and gunk fall out and the armature seems to be stuck in their. Starting to think I might need a new starter, but where would I find one for a 1970 399cc Kohler engine?

Hi shepp, just google for the bosch part #. I wanted to buy a new one for my hustler, but when I saw it would cost me $183, I had my starter rebuilt.
