I appreciate any help. Its snowing outside so had to come in. My engine has good compression, starts well but back fires and loses power and makes the spark plug black. I read on another engine in here, B&S, that suggested changing the fuel line. I got this argo used, not sure if the springs are in the right spots as there are numerous spring holes in the levers for the govenor to a link on the carb. Any ideas and or pictures of how it should be set up would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

That carb may have adjustment screws OTHER than the idle, if so try to reset them at 1-1/4 for a starting point and see what it does. Most carbs had an idle screw, idle air mixture screw and a high speed or main jet screw.
There also may be other issues with the carb. such as needing a rebuild.
If you have a spark plug replace it.sigpic

Holes in the lever, 3 across in 2 different places. I believe it is the govenor lever bolted to engine on a pivot. , it has a steel line to open or close the throttle on the carb. I change the plug everytime i go out. 1 hour ride it is black. Carb has 2 screws, 1 for idling and 1 other screw adjustment. i will see tomorrow if 1 1/4 turns out from all the way turned in. thanks. i can take a few pics. would like to fix this issue. maybe a carb kit is in order as well. Today i screwed in the carb screw, was out at least 2 turns, i unscrewed it 1 1/4 turns and changed some gas lines. I will install a carb kit this summer and change the fuel pump. It runs with a lot less backfiring.

Today it was very hard to start. cant get it to stay running. have to play with throttle and choke to get it to run. carb kit has to be ordered. I have a spare engine i rebuilt will try the carb off that engine. It used to start, run very well. Hoping for best.

Thank you. I sent you an email. Like i said in that email, today i put another carb on the engine and set the screw to 1 1/4 turns, ran but had to play with throttle, choke, and key. not enough hands lol god knows i like a challenge. i did take it around the yard and seemed to go ok. doesnt want to idle down much. was still back firing a bit. lots of gas coming from carb. i was thinking about the gap the cdi unit reads may need adjusting? pins on flywheel need cleaning? sand paper? having a gourgious weather week. want to use this argo to assist if needed to pull ice hut off lake this weekend. thanks for any help.

Does your carb also have a screw in the bottom of the fuel bowl?
Turns out I may be wrong, if your carb has the idle jet at mid. carb and the high speed jet at the bowl, adjust each initially to 1 turn. If mow lower adjustable jet still turn idle jet to one turn.sigpic

This carb doesnt have the screw with a spring in the bottom cup. This is a WHG carb. I have 2 of them. I bought a carb kit for it today, i have the carb soaking in varsol overnight. i replaced the fuel filter and bought another minkuni pump. The guy told me i shouldnt need the inline primer ball that was there when i bought it. i changed the main fuel line. I started it up with yesterdays carb on it. It did start better but still stalled. I will put the kit in the other carb and try it soon.

Not sure, but sounds like a stuck float to me. Might have saved some money if you had pulled the carb, dropped the float and needle and just blown it out with compressed air. But, now that you have rebuilt it you shouldn't have any more problems. Inline filters have their reason for being there, but sometimes sh*t just happensGlad you got er goin.
