max 2 16 hp vanguard upgrade

hey friends, anyone replaced their max 2 16 h.p. b&s vanguard with a 20-22 h.p. vanguard? what is the 16 h.p. shaft size and length ? if you go with the larger h.p. besides different mounting do you have to buy a new clutch ? and if you want to retain the stock muffler setup , are the right manifolds available ? just want to understand what all is involved in the switch. thanks a bunch ! john boy va.

I had a 16 in my IV and swapped it to a 23. I used the same clutch, belt, and wiring harness. I did need to get a new exhaust, but my engine actually came with one.

drew, if you look up the co. '' brand new engines '' on the web they show a 23 hp vanguard with 1'' x 2 / 29/32 '' shaft tapped 3/8''. will that work.? or does the shaft need to be longer ? comes with no muffler or manifold. could the 16 hp manifold be modified to fit ? thanks john boy

That engine should work fine. I got my 18 in my Attex from them on a no reserve auction. The 23 and 16 need different manifolds. I'm sure one could fab a 16 manifold to work on a 23, but I'm probably not that person.

The spacing on the flange bolts and tube size is larger on the 21-23 hp engines. I've modified mufflers and I would purchase the correct one unless your labor is a nickel an hour.

For external muffler Briggs # 808909 exits to the starter side. Page 10-24 of Briggs accessories catalog. Can't get it to paste in this thread.
