  • Vanguard engine died, Help

    Hi All
I installed a high rev kit and made sure all valves were adjusted correctly. the past 2 days I have put 40 minutes on the engine with no load but multiple RPM ranges. one time it ran for 28 minutes with no issues. was checking all the chains and bearings due to a new install. every time it started perfect and puuured. Today I put the tires on and went for a test spin. I did a couple of 360's checked my split shift all was perfect. I went up a small but very step incline all was good then on a straight away the engine died like it ran out of gas and would not start.

I removed the flywheel and all was good and they key did not shear, spark is good. starts up instant with staring fluid, Fuel pump is new and when disconnect from carb pumps like crazy. pulled carb top off an all looks good and float bowl is full.

every 5 minutes or so it will start right up and run for about 3 sec and die.

why will my carb not supply the engine with gas?? is it possible my intake valves need to be readjusted after it ran for a while then under load??

    thanks guys for any help

Did you blow out the main jet in carb? Sounds like you picked up a piece of trash. I see a lot of small hose pieces in carbs. Maybe a piece of old hose left in a fitting or at the pump. Just did an Argo with a piece lodged in the inlet to the carb. That bowl was dry with loads of fuel to it. Good luck

Does yours have a fuel solonid on the base of the carb. If that's not getting power or is stuck it also shuts the fuel off to the main jet.

LMFAO. yes I checked the gas, that was the first thing my buddies hoolard at me to check as they were laughing. I put 2 gallons in before the first start. checked the valves all are good. must be something in the jet as stated above. I will pull it apart tomorrow and let you all know. funny thing is that it sat for 6 years in my garage and fired right up 3 days ago. my gaskets came in for the carb and I cleaned it then it ran for 40 minutes total and now this..... rule number 1, if it aint broke don't fix it.

Does not have a fuel solenoid

          thanks all

If you had your air filter assembly off and happened to replace the line from the pump to the carb, make sure it did not kink. I put the blue line on my IV and it works great everywhere but behind the pump to the carb. It always goes on alright, but then it eventually kinks and causes a problem such as you are describing.

My argo was doing something similar and it was a dirty jet. Did this a couple times and on the finally cleaning i actually cleaned the top of the carb under the gasket and there was a bunch of stuff that was coming lose from gas sloshing around. Also had same issues with gas line. I only run the clear stuff now.

the main jet was plugged solid with what appeared to be a piece of gasket material. I took pictures of it and will post later in hopes it will help someone else. I then drilled it out to .040 and WOW this thing is awesome with the jet fixed and the high rev kit. later today I will be doing a speed check with my GPS. So glad I did not sell it last month and instead did a 100 percent rebuild. I cannot thank all of the people on this forum for all the help and advice, It is very easy for me at least to get tunnel vision while trying to troubleshoot stuff.

Did a speed test and I clocked 25MPH 3 times in a row. It looks like I could go a little faster as my RPM under load is only 5000. I might adjust the linkage to get me to 5500 under load. overall I am very please with it. Now it is time to find someplace to really test it out to see if any tweaks need to be done
