  • Weber 40IDF Carb..

    Hi,
Has anyone ever tried to put a Weber 40IDF 2 barrel carb onto a Briggs/Stratton?

I'm an old Porsche nut, and know this carb in and out. I think it may work well as long as the manifold is fabricated properly and the jetting, etc, is done right.
    What do you guys think?

Are both venturi 40mm? If so, it might be a lot of carb for a briggs, even the larger bore motors like the 61ci (36hp). It should still work if you get the jetting tweaked (if the main jets are too large, you run the risk of the excess fuel washing the oil from the cylinder walls, and it will really shorten ring and cylinder bore life) , but you might not get good throttle response. The factory 2bbl on my 33hp has 22mm venturi, and I plan to install dual 30mm mikuni sometime this year, but I do not want to go any larger. Keep us posted!

The straight port in jerseybigfoot's pic might be effective, but fitment in an argo..

If you want to play with a weber you could. If you want to make power, the mundane answer is the stock carb. It'll probably make 40 hp with nothing more than enlarging the jets with a .040" drill. But only after you put all the other engine components in it where the real power would come from. Then if you want the last 10 hp to go from 40 to 50, there are extensive machine mods to the briggs 2 bbl. Guess what I'm saying is the carb is not limiting hp on the stock engine. You can pull those limiter caps off the idle mixture screws for starters..

          Makes sense...
What kind of $$ are we talking about for those kinds of mods?

Wow! That's a lot of carb! I'm an old VW nut & have used dual 40IDF's on my motors but nothing as small as a B&S.
These guys got it right, there are far better & easier way's to do it!
BTW: why are you wanting to swap out carbs? The stock B&S carb is more than sufficent, even for a little performance!

Jim, a lot of variables on cost. Probably a minimum of $800 in parts, not including labor and a little machining, to a few thousand for something pre built like whipper's 50 hp attex.

I run a pair of 44's on a 1915cc vw motor, that would be alot of carb even on a big B&S. There are alot of better solutions to making hp listen to these guys on here who have built motors, or contact Performance V-Twins. None of these guys will steer you wrong. Just beware of the age old problem of over carburating, that's as hard on parts as running to lean.

                Just my opinion.

                  Silverbullet,

What model Briggs is in your Argo? There are some mods you can do to get a few extra ponies that will not break the bank, and not compromise the reliability of your engine.

                    Hi,
                    Thanks for all the replies!
Yeah.. I figured it would be a bit too much carb. I just always have liked Webers. I had a couple Porsche 914s with the Type 4 VW motor... Dual 40IDFs... I had tuning them down to a science... from jetting to venturies, etc...
Hmm... maybe a 2.0L flat-4 in the Argo! LOL... uh.. too big.

My engine is the 23hp Vanguard B&S.
