  • Honda engien smokes

    Hi all
Slightly of topic as my engine is not on a 6 wheeler.
I have a Honda GX 340 GC05-3127412 the engine smokes at start up and all rpm's continuously. It starts perfect and runs perfect just smokes bad.
    Things found
    1. Looks like the valve stem seals are hard and probe not sealing. Is this a possibility?
    2. I removed the head and there was about a 1/2 eyedropper amount of oil on top of the piston, the piston was clean and no carbon build up on it.
    3. The cross thatching looked very good with a small amount of horizontal scratches. I need a bright light to see them.
    4. I used a drill to turn the engine over for about 1 minute with out the spark plug in to see if oil was getting past the oil ring. After 1 minute there was a small film of oil forming on the cylinder wall above the piston. Is that normal

Do I need new rings and re hone the cylinder wall?
Should I replace the valve stem seals.
I have tried to look up the S/N but am unable to figure out the code (QC, V, K1 ETC) any help would be awesome. This engine is for a Amish friend of mine in northern Maine and just needs to be running normal.

    Thanks All
    Larry

Are we sure its not over full of oil, could have the wrong dipstick oil thinned out/dirty

I'd drain it and put a known right amount in and try it.

I think this link is right, you may want to check more

      Thanks for the reply
The oil was full to the rim, dirty but not really thinned out. I have it all torn down so I going to re ring it, valve stem seals and call it a day. Wish I would wish I would have posted sooner. I would have changed oil first and saved a lot of time. The dip stick is not stepped like I see in the parts manual so It is probe the wrong one

      Thanks

        Engine S/N help
I am having a problem finding my exact type.
Numbers on the Honda engine are
        GX340
        QA26
        GC05-3127412
only engines I can find online with a QA in it also has K1 after the GX340 BUT MY ENGINE Does not
I am only looking for piston rings and gaskets. I'm I right to think that all GX series engines will have the same rings and head gaskets?

        Thanks
        Larry

i can't say, most times the codes refer mfg dates, crankshaft and pto mounting but a dealer could dial ya in.

1.1 qts oil if i remember right...
