did you take the key switch off the new engine? if possible do you have the old engine numbers as well? aslo look at the old engines color of wires and then the new and post. i think i know what the problem is but just want to make 100% sure before i say. if those are possible i would like to have or see if u got pics along with key wires. make sure u have a good ground.

hey guys, i have the top and tracks on cause we are now at about 32'' of snow. finally got to deep to get to the barn for the horse feeding. i guess when it's that deep you need really wide rubber tracks. i did not use the new switch. i do have the black wire that was bolted to the 16 hp motor bolted on the new one the same way. the 16 hp is model # 303447 type 1026-e1. it does have the wire stud hookup above the model tag like the 22. maybe that's the wire i missed hooking up. now , what i wrote down on the original max wiring was : red wire to rectifier, black wire on same connector to engine ground, third green wire to starter solenoid tang. there was a red and black wire with a plug in that has never been hooked to anything. then 2 more black wires that ground to battery and 1 red that connects to positive on battery. maybe some of those have to do with the lights. first thing when i open it up again is see if i'm missed a wire that connects to that wire stud by the above the tag i.d. other than that i will post wire colors of new switch still mounted on the 21 and we can go from there. appreciate it !! j.b.

is the key switch mounted in plastic? start it up take a wire ground it to good engine block and then touch it to the post where the wires come out of the stud or just touch it to the wires that go to the stud and see if it kills it then. is your battery in good shape does seem to be going down. because if so it might be because the fuel solnoid is staying hot all times and if so it wont kill it. but where the stud goes thur the plastic cover they have had problems with because plastic doesnt ground good. if u got a volt meter might have to meter it out.ill take a look at the other numbers you posted for the old engine.

the switch that is on the 22 is mounted in plastic. the max switch is on the tub dash. battery is good and not discharging. if your talking about the anti backfire solenoid that scews in to the carb i removed it per amph. drew saying you don't really need it and can go bad later. not sure when you say stud that goes thru plastic cover what stud you mean. is it the copper or brass bolt above the i.d. ? if you look at the motor picture nubs posted above, i see a black wire attached to that bolt above the i.d. tag , but can't tell where it goes. if i put a wire on that and ground it that could'nt fry the the coil could it ? i know we'll figure it out. thanks for your patience. i can't do anything but work on this cause were snowed in with 36'' !! max is in the garage so i'll take the top off, lift the tub and keep figuring it out. i know we'll get it and i'll learn something . j.b.

sorry when i started reading the post the pics wouldnt come up just now got them up to see them. yes that is the stud i am talking about above the model number id tag. now when you took the key out was there wires coming from the key to that stud? and if so what color? right now you shouldnt have any there at all. that is a ground.i bet your key you took out was hooked to that and that is what kiiled your engine from the key. my guess is that is your problem and why it isnt killing with your key switch. if i am thinking right from the key you took out the orange and black wires should be gone is that correct? the orange went to the starter and the black went to the stud. if that is right your missing the ground wire. no worries we got it just confused to what was really going on and hard to figure out over the net. just about a month ago i had a honda that blowed up in a grave digger which was a terminate. we got a replacement engine that we suppose to just be plug and play. we took the key out of the new engine just like yourself. the wiring was different from the other engine that came out. could get it to run and not shut off as well. then got it to shut off but the oil shut down wasnt working and never did get it to work. long story short it was a night mare of a job. we got close to a foot here with some drifts about 2' plus. enjoy it and have fun riding.

You boys are way over thinking this deal, find a wire that only has continuity to ground when the key is off. key on = no continuity to ground and no voltage, clip that wire on the post in the picture and call it a day.. Never trust the color of a wire in a used machine. there's only a handful of wires to sort out. if the old 16 shut off with the key? the new engine will do the same
Just sayin'

o.k. guys..thanks again for your help and patience. i realized not knowing alot about the wiring, i was nervous about shorting something on a new motor. anyway i took a piece of wire and held it on that post and then grounded to the motor and it did quit. so then i unhooked the black ground that was bolted to the motor and put it on the stud as you said. and yes that was the ticket. works great. maybe because the 16 was older it was a little different. anyway i'm good to go !! johnboy va.
