hey friends, just wondering if the b and s vanguards ( 21 h.p. ) come with the governors factory set for best rpm and h.p. ? any reason to readjust, etc. it's a new motor. thanks, johnboy va.

Check the rpms, also check the spring looks like the old one as there are different rates.

My new beer holder spilled some on the trails - in it's hair and down it's throat.
    Joe Camel never does that.

Advice is free, it's the application that costs.

thanks jim, i don't have a rpm checker. not sure what you mean about different spring rates.... you mean stronger , etc. do guys ever just bypass the governor to direct throttle to carb ? can that hurt the motor ? thanks again , j.b.

        Hi JB
I have my governor by passed on my 18. I am running a high rev kit and a tiny tach I normally try not to go above 4800 rpm but I have gone as high as 5500 for 10-20 seconds with no issues. Having the extra rpm is nice when I'm trying to go up a steep slippery hill

My own vehicle has governor bypassed. If your main gov spring isn't painted brown get Briggs # 691507 spring and install it. I have a hard time getting most of the governors that come with eBay engines to pull over 3600 rpm. Factory used to set to 4000 with belt on and that takes a strong spring.

thanks msafi65, that's what i needed to know. i will look again, but don't recall the main spring being brown. if not , i will order that spring part #. thanks for reply. so you can go direct to carb with throttle as long as you don't overrev ? i remember as a kid hooking up the throttles on minibikes and go karts direct to carb. thanks, j.b.

so are you saying the brown # 691507 is a stronger spring that gives higher rpms ? thanks, j.b.

As near as I know the # 691507 is the strongest gov spring. I bypass the governor by drilling a new hole in the be bell crank and leaving the throttle cable attached in the same place. I don't have the patern for modifying throttle rod on the two barrel carb. I believe it's different length than the 14-18 hp ones.
