  • Max II engine wont stay running

I have a 1996 Max II with the 14hp vanguard engine and you can start it up and it will run for 5-10 minutes then it just shuts down. You can start it back up and it will idle fine but when I give it gas it dies. If I let it sit for a few hours I can go and run it for another 5-10 minutes. Any idea what the problem could be. I replaced the fuel filter, spark plugs, and air filter.

First see if there is anything floating around in the fuel tank like a leaf or bug, also check that the fuel cap is vented by removing the cap just before it shuts down ( if you hear a vacuum and it straightens out there's your problem).

My new beer holder spilled some on the trails - in it's hair and down it's throat.
    Joe Camel never does that.

Advice is free, it's the application that costs.

ArgoJim has some good advice. After you check those things, you may want to clean the carburetor paying special attention to the port in the bottom of the bowl.

Checking the valve clearance would be a good idea as long as your going over it.

Thanks guys, I drained and washed out the tank and I ran it and new vented cap. I also cleaned the carburater(or what i could) and it continueds to die. I read that the ignition coils will sometimes get hot and quite working. Is this true? There was also mentions of a solenoid in the carburater? Thanks again, and if there is anything else I could check for please let me know this is kind of getting annoying

My vanguard on my cub cadet had the fuel solenoid. It would get little specs of dirt around it and cause stalling rough running randomly. Two fuel filters later it dawned on me it was the fuel line breaking down and that was what looked like dirt in the bowl.

              My next point to test.

Winner on the fuel lines for me. I kept seeing dirty carbs after cleaning the gas tank and carb and changing the fuel pump,
The fuel line after the filter was disintegrating.
Get 10ft plus another good fuel filter.
Plus the new fuel pump has a plastic replacement you can use, I tested it and it works great.

                #808656 for a plastic fuel pump $25
You can also rebuild you current one for cheaper, unsure of the part numbers though.
