Hey Cgant,

You're dealing with an early to mid 70s 340 free air engine, likely out of a Colt. The wiring on this is stone simple, and most of what is in your photograph should go bye-bye since it's not native to either the engine or the 6x6 (Sidewinder, as Jim asks?). Here's a simple wiring diagram to get you started:



There should be about five wires coming directly out from the recoil area (the stator plate on the diagram). Don't worry THAT much about the colors, but I'll bet they're close. The two yellow wires are associated with your lighting/charging coils. The brown wire is the kill wire for the engine. Ground this wire to kill the engine. The other two wires (red and white in this diagram) run to the ignition coils.

This engine is designed to get a fresh supply of air from the movement of the machine (originally a snowmobile) in order to cool it. Being locked up in the compartment of a 6x6 doesn't afford it cooling at all. I wouldn't plan on running this engine in this application. She'll overheat right-quick.

I don't know much about the Polaris engines from a "good/bad" standpoint, but when I sold this same engine on ebay several years ago, there were a ton of Polaris guys that showed interest. You'll never get an auxiliary fan to cool the engine the way an axial fan (belt driven off of the magneto side of the engine) would. To cool efficiently, it'd need tight shrouding against the engine and a stout electrical source like a car battery and a way to keep that battery charged. It's just not practical. My opinion would be that it's a good bet to pull this engine in favor of a fan cooled two stroke or a four stroke engine. There are plenty of good two strokes out there that are well-supported and reliable despite the obligatory two-stroke detractors out there. Another option would be to swap in a small four stroke single or twin (Kohler, Honda, Briggs etc.). It all depends on what you'd like to use the machine for. I'll bet you'll be able to squeeze out at least a couple hundred dollars from that Polaris 340 if it's in decent shape. Sled guys are always looking for spares....

So in a sidewinder the engine sits backwards. Should it be really a backasswinder????
