if you put the brushes in the wrong order it won't work. 2 should be for power, and 2 for ground. they need to be power- ground- power- ground... if that doesn't get it going, you need to take it to a starter and alternator shop and let a pro look at it. something disrupting the magnetic field... one of the magnets came loose and moved inside the case so that the 2 magnets are touching together.... a break in one of the wires making up the comutator windings.... lots of things could cause your issue

The brushes connected to the case are negative, the brushes connected to the electrical stud are positive.

when you say stud u mean the little bolt sticking out of the end cap housing? and the negative are the ones that can be removed?

i just put some heat shrink tubing over the wires that are connected to a bolt and holds down the brush holder. i forgot to check the order again but it still wont work. the battery is 100 percent charged also. no wires are touching the casing. whats going on????

Read the last think I posted. No point asking for more advise if you haven't tried all the suggestions

you may need to just take it to a starter mechanic so you can get your machine running and ride again. not sure anyone else on the site is able to help any further. j.b.

On my Argo HDI I just put on a new solenoid.
To test I have to ground the starter to battery and positive lead to solenoid terminal, and then a positive jump wire to the trigger spade
                    connector.

Curtis I take it that your girlfriend's father was able to fix your starter? Are you asking about the connections at the solenoid?

Curtis you have to be more descriptive, and please answer the question. Are you dealing with the solenoid? OR...are you wiring the starter directly to the battery. If you're wiring directly to the battery its going to turn without the key - that's the wrong way to wire it. Surely you're wiring at the solenoid, right?
