To answer your question though, the Briggs 18hp motor is a 4 stroke.

2 stroke = no way to check oil - gas and oil get mixed togther and both burn through combustion = blue smoke out the tail pipe
4 stroke = you can check oil (dipstick, sight window, etc) the engine oil stays in the crankcase and only fuel is consumed during normal operation = cleaner burning

Two stroke: Piston goes up and down two times per crank shaft revolution. Four stroke: piston goes up and down 4 times per revolution. Two stroke makes more power at high RPMs than a four stroke. There are other differences as stated by others.

All modern machines are produced 4 stroke since about 1990 with the Big Max being the last 2 stroke hold out I know of.
Technically they are neither 4 stroke or 2 stroke but 4 cycle or 2 cycle, many (people) of us use the word stroke as it is common said though incorrect. The reason for this is the amount of strokes the piston comes to top dead center before the spark is fired.

4 cycle engines have a camshaft and valves ( OK Don hit me, I know where you're gonna go), most 2 cycles/strokes have either ports or reed valves.

The stroke you have listed there is the amount of piston travel your engine has.

that 2.75 listed for stroke is the distance of travel between top dead centre and bottom dead centre. That particular measurement is in inches.

1st cycle-intake. piston going down

2nd cycle-compression. piston going up

3rd cycle-ignition/power. piston going down

4th cycle- exhaust. piston going up
