Looking through the briggs and Stratton vanguard shop manual I don't find actual piston to cylinder clearance specs. I find bore specs ect. but not nominal piston sizes. What clearances are being used in these engines? Looking at stock clearance as this one is pretty worn out and is right at .005". Cylinders have been rusty and will need to be resized. The kohler manual shows between .002-.0035 in air cooled v twin of similar bore. Thanks for info, thought I was going blind but it's not in my book.

if you are reboring an engine you obviously will be buying an oversize piston, the shop that does the boring and honing will match
the piston to bore with proper clearance. otherwise you could possibly buy a new piston , stock and do a cheapo re-ring and hone
and hope for the best. clearance should be what you found with the kohler specs.
